The VA Salisbury Healthcare System is one of the leading health care systems serving Veterans in the Mid-Atlantic Region. We provide health care services at 4 locations in the Central Piedmont region of North Carolina: our W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury and 3 health care center or community-based outpatient clinics in Kernersville, North Charlotte, and South Charlotte.
Qualifications To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
Resident currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties under supervision
In addition, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience: Urology Board certified; full-time employee; appointed on a career basis with tenure spanning several years
Experience in managing high volume clinical services with knowledge of strategic planning and human resource/employee supervision
Experience in resident oversight including recent work with residents in the OR and clinic as scrubbed attending in accordance with ACGME requirements

Physical Requirements
Physical demands include repetitive body movements such as frequent reaching, standing, walking, and lifting of equipment and/or patients to provide patient care
This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction, including above or below shoulder level, during patient care, including retrieval of equipment and supplies and contact with the patient
This position requires maintaining an upright position to perform duties associated with patient care
This position is typically non-sedentary and frequently involves being in the standing position
This position requires moving about to accomplish tasks, such as assisting with patient ambulation and moving one patient area to the next
This position requires raising objects from a lower position to a higher position or moving objects horizontally
Lifting may be done to move a patient from one location to another, such as from the exam table to a chair, and in moving equipment or supplies
Capable of potentially driving 100 miles in one day if required to drive from one HCC to another to evaluate a situation in person
Responsibilities
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program
Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment
Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply
We are seeking a full‑time academic urologist to be part of a rapidly expanding urology program at Salisbury VAMC, Salisbury, NC
The urologist shall have a clinical appointment at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and will be actively involved in resident training
Each year, the urology section performs over 600 OR procedures, about 1,500 outpatient procedures, and sees 16,000 patients in clinic
Duties and responsibilities of the Urology Chief, but are not limited to:
Administrative duties: Facilitate and attend all monthly section staff meetings; consult leadership with issues related to adverse patient outcomes
Effective written and oral communication with subordinates and leaders; prepare section strategic planning; monitor clinic management
Provide supervisory, administrative, and clinical oversight for all urology providers and trainees, as well as clinical oversight of urology nurse‑managed clinics at all Salisbury HCS facilities
This requires a main presence at the Salisbury main VA and travel periodically to the HCCs
Perform other administrative duties as needed
Clinical duties: The incumbent is expected to remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field
The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board
All physicians must meet the following qualifications: Patient care – provide direct patient care; participate in call schedule; medical/clinical knowledge – demonstrate knowledge of specialty and use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care
Professionalism – demonstrate behaviors reflecting continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward patients and profession
Systems‑based practice – demonstrate understanding of contexts and systems of health care provision and apply this knowledge to improve care optimization
Education – show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision requirements
Work collaboratively with academic affiliate; direct supervision of trainees (physical presence) in clinic and OR; including scrubbing with trainees in OR
Research and development – if involved in research, identify and define significant problems, plan and execute precise research program, and generate effective reports and results worthy of publication
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday – 7:30 am to 4:00 pm (supervisory discretion)
