Director, Assistant Controller
to join our team on a contract basis in San Diego, CA. This pivotal role is perfect for a seasoned financial leader who can immediately step in to ensure operational excellence within the General Ledger and Accounts Payable functions while strategically driving continuous improvement and automation initiatives.
Pay Rate:
$100 - $120 per hour (W2)
POSITION SUMMARY The Director, Assistant Controller is a key finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger and accounts payable functions while driving strategic improvements across financial operations. This role combines operational excellence with forward-looking leadership, overseeing compliance, automation initiatives, and team development. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and enabling organizational growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The core focus of this role is divided between operational oversight and strategic improvement:
Financial Operations & Reporting Integrity
Oversee and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all general ledger postings and reconciliations.
Lead the month-end close process, delivering reliable financial reporting timely.
Drive optimization of general ledger and financial systems to enhance efficiencies.
Accounts Payable Leadership & Automation
Oversee accounts payable operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and payments.
Champion accounts payable automation initiatives to reduce manual processing and improve cycle times.
Drive optimization of accounts payable process to enhance quality of documentation and streamline processes.
Controls, Compliance, and Risk Management
Maintain policies and procedures for accounts payable to ensure adherence to company guidelines and compliance with financial regulations.
Conduct periodic risk assessments of accounts payable and general ledger processes to identify vulnerabilities.
Proactively identify and implement control enhancements.
Build, mentor, and lead high-performing accounts payable and general ledger teams.
Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Encourage proactive problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, and Knowledge
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in an accredited accounting program with at least
15 years
of progressive accounting experience and
5+ years
in leadership roles (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting, and compliance.
Experience in public company environments; pharmaceutical/biotech/life sciences background preferred.
Strong proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Great Plains, Epicor), AP tools (e.g., Concur), and Microsoft Office Suite.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated success in driving automation and process improvements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA license.
'Big Four' public accounting experience at manager level or above.
