Director, Assistant Controller
The Director, Assistant Controller is a key finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger and accounts payable functions while driving strategic improvements across financial operations. This role combines operational excellence with forward-looking leadership, overseeing compliance, automation initiatives, and team development. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and enabling organizational growth.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Oversee and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all general ledger postings and reconciliations.
Lead the month‑end close process, delivering reliable financial reporting in a timely manner.
Drive optimization of general ledger and financial systems to enhance general ledger efficiencies.
Oversee accounts payable operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and payments.
Champion accounts payable automation initiatives to reduce manual processing and improve cycle times.
Drive optimization of accounts payable process to enhance quality of documentation and streamline processes.
Maintain policies and procedures for accounts payable to ensure adherence to company guidelines and compliance with financial regulations.
Conduct periodic risk assessments of accounts payable and general ledger processes to identify vulnerabilities.
Proactively identify and implement control enhancements.
Build, mentor, and lead high‑performing accounts payable and general ledger teams.
Foster a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement.
Encourage proactive problem‑solving and cross‑functional collaboration.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum of a Bachelors’ degree in an accredited accounting program with at least 15 years progressive accounting experience and 5+ years in leadership roles (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting and compliance.
Experience in public company environments; pharmaceutical/biotech/life sciences background preferred.
Strong proficiency with ERP systems (NetSuite, Great Plains, Epicor), AP tools (Concur) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Demonstrated success in driving automation and process improvements.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
CPA license and “Big Four” public accounting experience at manager level or above preferred.
Environmental Conditions
Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, be at a desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer the telephone and type on a computer.
Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required.
The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
