Description
The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will serve as the representative of pharmacy within their area, overseeing all aspects of the pharmacy care provided. They will review pharmacy and organizational policies regarding drug use and prepare for regulatory audits. Responsibilities include formulary management, drug-related education, collaboration with hospital departments to evaluate and improve pharmacy services, and training clinical staff and learners, including competency assessments. The role also involves oversight of pharmacy team members on their unit when applicable, academic scholarship activities such as authorship and presentations, and supporting the development of collaborative practice opportunities at Children's National. Qualifications
Minimum Education Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) (Required) Minimum Work Experience At least 2 years, including a year in a pediatric, specialized, academic, or clinical setting. 6 years required for candidates without a PGY2 residency. (Required) Required Licenses and Certifications Pharmacist eligible for licensure in DC, MD, and VA (specialty dependent). 90 days. (Required) Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS). 1 year. (Required) Functional Accountabilities
Interpret medication orders, oversee packaging, labeling, and distribution. Input orders into pharmacy systems when appropriate. Maintain distribution skills and assist in unit inspections and accreditation readiness. Review medication lists for safety issues and verify new medication orders. Assist staff with automated dispensing questions. Interventions and Documentation
Monitor drug therapy, intervene as needed, and document interventions. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for medication access and reconciliation. Staff Development and Training
Educate and supervise pharmacy students and residents. Assist in training new pharmacists and provide educational presentations. Clinical Services
Ensure appropriate medication use, evaluate drugs for formulary consideration, and provide drug information. Maintain evidence-based clinical practice and serve as a resource for staff. Manage drug shortages and participate in key committees. Quality Improvement
Lead cost-saving and quality initiatives, contribute to order set development, and support clinical pharmacy growth. Professional Development
Participate in research, attend conferences, and engage in preceptor development and scholarly activities. Organizational Accountabilities
Respond to customer needs, demonstrate teamwork, contribute to a positive environment, and promote safety. Additional responsibilities include efficient resource use, safety promotion, and effective communication.
