Assistant Professor of 18th/19th Century American History

The Department of History at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure‑track position as Assistant Professor of 18th/19th‑Century American History, beginning August 2026. The role emphasizes strong undergraduate teaching, potential in graduate instruction, and an active scholarly agenda. Candidates with expertise in Native American History, especially with a regional focus on the Southeast, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Teach six courses per year, including U.S. History survey courses and upper‑level specialist courses in the nineteenth century, in collaboration with the Department Chair.
  • Prepare course content, syllabi, and University Moodle/curricular site for each course/lab each semester; communicate with students, calculate and assign grades, and track attendance per university procedures.
  • Conduct research in the field or produce creative work, training students in relevant research and production techniques.
  • Maintain regular office hours each week and participate in faculty activities such as committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, and scholarly pursuits as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. by the time of appointment with a focus on American History within the period 1783–1898.
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, potential for excellence in graduate instruction, and an active scholarly agenda.
  • Strong potential for teaching excellence and the ability to contribute to curriculum development for the Social Studies major, related minors, certificates, or initiatives at the departmental or college level.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong potential for excellence in teaching.
