Senior Counsel and Director, Alternative Credit

Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI), the investment arm of Liberty Mutual, manages over $100 billion of capital worldwide. The Alternative Credit Senior Counsel and Director is a newly created role that will act as the key legal advisor to LMI’s Alternative Markets platform and support the Head of Alternative Credit. The position requires deep expertise in asset‑backed financing across diverse asset classes and structures, including consumer, commercial, energy, infrastructure, fund finance, residential and emerging FinTech‑originated receivables. The successful candidate will collaborate with investment professionals, portfolio managers and other stakeholders to optimize deal execution, manage legal risk and maintain best‑in‑class operational and legal standards.
Responsibilities
Structure, negotiate, and execute complex structured finance transactions, including asset securitizations, financings across the capital structure, and forward flow purchase facilities.
Advise on the financing and acquisition of a broad spectrum of asset types such as consumer loans and receivables (including FinTech and marketplace‑originated assets), commercial loans (including small business loans and equipment financing), energy & infrastructure finance, and residential/commercial mortgage loans.
Collaborate closely with investment professionals, portfolio managers, and other business stakeholders to support portfolio construction, underwriting, and ongoing monitoring of investments.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal partners (legal, risk, compliance, investments, senior management) and external constituencies (borrowers, lenders, outside counsel, and other business partners).
Monitor developments in relevant legal and regulatory frameworks; ensure transactions and structures comply with legal requirements.
Facilitate consensus‑building among diverse stakeholder groups and lead negotiations through complex and ambiguous matters, ensuring efficient and pragmatic resolution of inter‑party issues.
Develop and implement best practices for legal risk mitigation and transaction efficiency across the alternative credit platform; ensure best practices are followed in engagement with new asset classes, lending platforms, and innovative financial structures.
Monitor and interpret developments in law and market trends affecting structured finance and alternative credit investments, proactively advising the business and adapting strategies accordingly.
Qualifications
Significant relevant experience at leading law firm or corporate environments; JD and admission in good standing to a US jurisdiction.
Substantial experience structuring and negotiating structured finance transactions such as asset securitizations, warehouse financings, energy and infrastructure finance, and forward flow purchase facilities.
Demonstrated ability to navigate complexity and drive consensus underpinned by strong stakeholder management skills.
Transactional experience with a varied array of asset types, including consumer loans, receivables, business loans (CLOs), trade receivables, and residential/commercial mortgage loans.
Self‑starter with a bias for action and implementation, motivated to impact and contribute to company objectives.
Collaborative senior lawyer who balances risk with organizational growth and commercial objectives; excellent judgment and ability to move at the pace of the business.
Excellent interpersonal skills, strong credibility, and the ability to inspire performance and commitment.
