The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI) is seeking a part-time Psychiatrist to join our team! This appointment features a Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. weekly schedule with rotating on‑call responsibilities.
The Psychiatrist provides medical and psychiatric care to patients at CMHI by way of consultation, supervision, and direction of the CMHI medical staff. The Psychiatrist provides clinical supervision of mid‑level providers (e.g., Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner) and is responsible for developing medical or psychiatric treatment plans for patients at CMHI in collaboration with those providers. The Psychiatrist reviews treatment plans and provides consultation to the assigned mid‑level provider and other disciplines at CMHI. This position is responsible for preparing psychiatric/forensic evaluations for submission to the courts in accordance with deadlines established by statute and/or the courts, prescribing medications and determining when patient referral is necessary, as well as completing medical reports documenting treatment services provided to patients.
This position will also provide after‑hours coverage as the officer of the day as required by the needs of CMHI on a rotating schedule with other CMHI medical staff. Additionally, this position will provide education, training, and/or conference teaching in the areas of psychiatry and/or general medicine. With this position, there will also be opportunities to provide direction to medical school graduates in CMHI’s psychiatric internship program.
Applicants will be required to complete a background check to be considered for this position.
Board Certification in Psychiatry is required.
Completion of a psychiatry residency program will fulfill the internship program requirement.
CMHI provides active inpatient treatment to adults in need of acute psychiatric care. The facility offers several services including individualized treatment plans. Support for patients with special education needs to continue their education is provided, and individuals are encouraged to collaborate with staff members in formulating their own plan. Medication, group counseling, and activities therapies might be included as well.
