We are seeking an experienced and visionary Group Director to lead a dynamic team of over 50 professionals specializing in municipal roadway, water resources, and electrical planning and engineering design services across our Central States Office, comprised of locations in Kansas City, MO, Overland Park, KS, Des Moines, IA, St. Louis, MO and Oklahoma City, OK. This leadership role will oversee the planning, design, and execution of complex infrastructure projects for a diverse range of federal, municipal and private sector clients. The ideal candidate will also serve as a strategic leader with local municipalities across the Midwest region and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

This opportunity entails leading a multi-discipline group in the design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. The Group Director collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm’s strategic sales and planning approaches while assisting with project pursuits and proposals.

Responsibilities include overseeing project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. The Group Director will be responsible for technical coaching and mentoring, efficient utilization of staff, and administrative oversight of departmental financial metrics to ensure adherence to group goals.

What You'll Do

Direct and supervise the development and management of operating budgets for the departments within the Group.

Coordinate group activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects.

Collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

Drive implementation of HNTB’s strategic plan and SSA process on project pursuits and markets with the Group.

Implement contracting process through project delivery and contracting activities, including scope, work plan and fee reviews.

Implement project delivery process, including work planning, monthly project reviews and performance methods to ensure quality work on time and on schedule.

Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews and win-to-work activities.

Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction and lead sales and marketing efforts for department growth.

Recruit, hire, develop and retain department staff within the group.

Manage assigned project management activities and perform technical discipline tasks such as research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

Lead a group including direct and indirect supervision of at least 25 but typically 35-40 employees.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need

Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience, including 4 years of supervisory experience.

What We Prefer

Master’s degree

15 years practical experience

6 years supervisory experience

Professional Engineer (PE) certification

American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Municipal, federal and private sector client relationships across the Midwest, ideally in the major metropolitan areas of Kansas City, MO/KS, St. Louis, MO, Des Moines, IA, and Oklahoma City, OK.
