Tax Managing Director, Core Tax Services
Job Description
The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry‑specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Tax Managing Director applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The position is a critical member of the office/region leadership team, involved in direct supervision as either a final or secondary reviewer under the partner, and actively participates in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures firm and client service teams comply with firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
Manages engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.
Practices hands‑on client service delivery.
Encourages team adherence to TQM policies (engagement letters, documentation, etc.).
Research
Identifies when research is needed, frames issues, and reports analysis concisely.
Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research process.
Technical reviewer of WTAs in an area of expertise, as applicable.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Proactively applies firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
Applies technical expertise regarding income tax provisions in the area of international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation issues.
Reviews and applies income tax provision efficiently.
Tax Consulting
Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
Applies expert knowledge of the process of combining tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions and maximize results.
Applies general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (e.g., International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
Tax Specialization
Develops an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation.
Has expert knowledge of application of standards.
Recognized as industry expert in a specialized field of taxation.
Uses expertise to advise clients on tax implications and recommend alternative courses of action.
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the firm, or firm personnel.
May be required to present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as the situation dictates.
Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
Act as a career advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.
Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ten (10) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
Prior supervisory experience required.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) required.
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
Software
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Massachusetts: $215,000 – $300,000
