Job Summary The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry‑specific knowledge to advise clients on tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. They will communicate potential risks, monitor changes in tax policy, and make top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. In addition, the Tax Managing Director will serve as a critical member of the office/region leadership team, provide direct supervision as a final or secondary reviewer under the partner, and actively participate in marketing, networking, and business development to maintain client relationships.

Job Duties

Tax Compliance

Ensures both that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.

Manages engagements to achieve engagement management metrics.

Practices hands‑on client service delivery.

Encourages team adherence to BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) policies.

Research

Identifies when research is needed, frames issues, and reports analysis.

Provides research methodology for efficient research process.

Acts as technical reviewer of WTAs in an area of expertise.

ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Applies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.

Applies expertise on income‑tax provisions in areas such as international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.

Reviews and applies income‑tax provision efficiently.

Tax Consulting

Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits.

Combines tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions.

Employs general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning).

Tax Specialization

Develops in‑depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits, R&D, etc.).

Has expert knowledge of application of standards.

Advises clients on tax implications and alternative courses of action.

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.

May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversee associates, senior associates, and managers as needed.

Review work prepared by others and provide review comments.

Act as a career advisor, schedule and manage workload.

Provide verbal and written performance feedback.

Education Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred. Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Superior verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to delegate work effectively.

Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills.

Capacity to work well in a team environment.

Ability to compose written tax advice.

Capable of developing and maintaining client relationships.

Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for presentation of issues and resolutions.

Experience

Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.

Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.

Prior supervisory experience required.

License/Certifications

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) required.

Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

California: $190,000 - $335,000

Colorado: $185,000 - $225,000

Illinois: $175,000 - $250,000

Maryland: $185,000 - $260,000

Massachusetts: $215,000 - $300,000

Minnesota: $170,000 - $250,000

New Jersey: $190,000 - $350,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $230,000 - $350,000

Washington: $196,400 - $249,400

Washington DC: $190,000 - $300,000
