Position Summary JMT is currently seeking a full‑time Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our companywide geotechnical design practice. This position is based in our newly relocated and growing office in the Easton area of Columbus, OH. The role will support a variety of project types, including many high‑profile projects across our company footprint in highways, bridges, aviation, rail & transit, marine and ports, water and wastewater, dams and levees, and buildings and facilities markets.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
Responsible for management and oversight of geotechnical investigations
Develop and implement subsurface investigation programs comprising test borings, cone penetrometers, dilatometers, and geophysical surveys
Perform engineering analysis of soils and rock for design of shallow and deep foundation systems, slope stability, excavations, permanent and temporary retaining systems, dewatering systems, and soil improvement
Prepare geotechnical reports and memoranda
Prepare construction documents including plans, specifications, and cost estimates
Respond to requests for qualifications and proposals
Assist in marketing efforts for growth and development of the geotechnical engineering practice in the Ohio and Pennsylvania Region
Conduct and manage on‑site geotechnical inspection and engineering services during construction
Nonessential Functions And Responsibilities
Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills
BS degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in geotechnical courses
5 to 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, including analysis, report writing, and proposal preparation
Experience with geotechnical software such as gINT, SLIDE, SETTLE3, LPILE, ALLPILE, ReSSA, etc., and LRFD design
Strong problem‑solving ability in both office and field environments, with a record of developing innovative solutions to geotechnical challenges
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with team members, clients, and contractors
Capacity for field assignments that may require walking and climbing through steep slopes or other natural obstacles
Capability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic, fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment
Coordination experience with clients, contractors, outside consultants, and firm staff
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Experience
MS degree in Geotechnical Engineering
Professional Engineer certification preferred
Proficiency in MicroStation/CADD preferred
Experience working on Federal, State, County, and local projects, including ODOT, PennDOT, and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
Working Conditions Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time; it is generally sedentary but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate, with no hazardous or unpleasant environmental conditions. Field work is required on occasion, which may involve outdoor conditions such as heat/cold, wet/humid, or dry/arid. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
