Build what moves New York.

Shape the future of bridge infrastructure in New York. Our teams deliver planning, inspection, preservation, and design services for bridges of every size and complexity. As our geotechnical liaison to the structural group, you’ll help steer foundation recommendations, subsurface interpretation, ground‑structure interaction considerations, and technical coordination for some of the region’s most visible bridge projects.

Who We Are GPI is a multi‑discipline engineering firm providing planning, design, and construction services for transportation infrastructure and building systems projects for 50+ years, ranked among ENR’s Top 100 firms. Our team supports major agencies across the Northeast, including NYSDOT, NYS Thruway Authority, MTA, and the Port Authority.

What You’ll Do

Lead geotechnical engineering for highway, bridge, transit, and maritime projects—from scoping and work planning through final design delivery.

Serve as the primary interface with structural engineers, ensuring seamless coordination on foundations, earth‑retaining systems, design criteria, and constructability.

Plan and oversee subsurface investigations (borings, test pits), lab testing programs, instrumentation, and prepare GDRs/GBRs.

Perform and review geotechnical analyses: deep and shallow foundations, ground improvement, MSE/SE walls, soil nails, tiebacks/anchors, settlement and consolidation, slope stability, lateral soil–structure interaction, seismic analyses, and liquefaction evaluation.

Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, technical memos, and geotechnical design reports in accordance with AASHTO LRFD and NYS agency standards.

Provide construction‑phase support, including RFIs, submittals, load tests, excavation support, and vibration/settlement monitoring.

Mentor junior engineers and collaborate closely with structural, roadway, and construction inspection teams.

Contribute to proposals, LOE estimates, and client presentations; help shape pursuit strategies for major infrastructure programs.

What You’ll Bring

B.S. in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus; M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering strongly preferred.

8+ years of geotechnical design and field experience on transportation projects.

New York P.E., or the ability to obtain within 6 months.

Proficiency with geotechnical software (e.g., gINT, LPILE/pyWall/Group, SLIDE/Rocscience, Settle3, FLAC/PLAXIS or equivalents).

Working knowledge of AASHTO LRFD, NYSDOT/MTA/Port Authority standards, and common construction means and methods.

Strong technical writing, QA/QC, and communication skills; ability to lead coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

Valid driver’s license and ability to visit project sites.

Why you’ll love this role

Work on signature bridge and transportation projects that shape mobility across New York.

Collaborate directly with senior structural engineering leaders—high visibility, high impact.

Opportunities for accelerated growth into technical leadership roles.

Supportive culture with strong professional‑development resources and modern geotechnical tools.

Requirements

Maintain a valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for final consideration.

Read, write, and understand plans and directions given in the English language.

Basic computer skills with the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word and Excel documents, create Outlook emails and utilize SharePoint and Microsoft Teams to communicate with other team members.

Able to traverse a construction job site consisting of uneven ground varying in height and consistency of material, with a variation of elevation 19" or less (mud, gravel, rutted ground, etc.).

Able to wear GPI required PPE, i.e., hard hats, safety vest, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles while working.

Able to move equipment or inspection specimens weighing up to 50 pounds.

Summary GPI offers excellent benefits, including a 401(k) plan, ESOP, medical/dental/vision plans, paid time off, and more. GPI is an equal‑opportunity employer.
