Job Description The Surgical Technologist (ST) is a member of the surgical team responsible for providing intra‑operative care to the surgical patient. This role requires working in a fast‑paced environment with a focus on patient progression goals, quality initiatives, and achieving the highest level of patient satisfaction. The ST precepts other staff and students and works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assists and collaborates with the Circulating Nurse to set up for surgical procedures with proper instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.

Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon at the sterile field as the primary ST.

Anticipates the needs of the surgical team during procedures and provides requisite instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Assists in the care, cleaning, and maintenance of all general and specialty instruments, equipment, and supplies according to established guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Collaborates with the Circulating Nurse to ensure accurate sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy.

Applies the principles of asepsis to maintain the integrity of the sterile field.

Participates in the unit-level quality improvement/quality assurance process.

Communicates effectively with surgical team members.

Engages in parallel processing with the Circulating Nurse/team staff to achieve turnover goals and on‑time starts.

Actively participates in the WHO Checklist, hand hygiene, and other department safety and quality initiatives.

Assumes on‑call assignments for specified nights, weekends, and holidays.

Handles specimens in accordance with policy and procedure.

Incorporates Lahey Hospital and Medical Center Guiding Principles, Mission Statement, and Goals into daily activities.

Complies with all Lahey Hospital and Medical Center policies.

Meets behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.

Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

Demonstrates an understanding of job expectations and competency assessment.

Demonstrates a commitment to meeting and exceeding customer needs and consistently adheres to Customer Service standards.

Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

Successfully completes mandatory education requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of a CAAHEP‑accredited surgical technology program.

Certification preferred. New hires must obtain certification within one month of hire.

Demonstrates the ability to be thoroughly trained to meet organizational standards.

Greater than one year of experience as a surgical technologist.

Pay Range $36.23 – $53.83 per hour. Base hourly wage; may increase with shift differentials, call pay, overtime, and other additional pay practices.

Vaccination Requirement All staff must be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.
