Job Description Summary
The George Washington University, in collaboration with the NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law and Society (TRAILS), invites applicants for Postdoctoral Associate positions. The role focuses on AI research that advances trust and trustworthiness, integrating perspectives from algorithm development, systems engineering, human psychology, sociology, law, science and technology studies, economics, and policy studies. Fellows will pursue independent research agendas, collaborate across multiple departments, co‑mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to community outreach such as seminar series and grant writing.
Responsibilities
Design, organize, and conduct specialized experiments following established scientific protocols.
Troubleshoot and develop new protocols as needed.
Summarize findings and publish results in peer‑reviewed journals, with supervision from faculty.
Provide oversight and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.
Collaborate with TRAILS faculty and the broader GWU, UMD, and MSU communities to shape research goals.
Engage in community‑building activities, including organizing the TRAILS seminar series and collaborating with NSF and campus leadership.
Participate in grant writing and other research‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field, completed or nearing completion by the start date.
Demonstrated research ability (e.g., publications, conference presentations).
Research agenda that aligns with at least two TRAILS faculty members.
Experience working in interdisciplinary settings.
Strong communication skills (written and oral).
Fulfillment of all requirements for the award of a Ph.D. or equivalent by the date of employment.
Desired Qualifications
Research agenda that overlaps with at least two GWU faculty members.
Demonstrated ability to work in highly interdisciplinary environments.
Active participation in the broader scientific community.
