Job Summary Performs as the first assistant to the surgeon, performing all duties of a Scrub Tech III with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and specialized instrumentation to assist the surgeon in safe, optimal operations.
Essential Functions
Demonstrates a clear understanding of sterile techniques and specialized instrumentation for various specialty procedures.
Anticipates and prioritizes the needs of the surgical steps.
Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
Maintains surgical specimens for pathology evaluation.
Assists in ordering and stocking specialty supplies under management direction.
Performs under direct supervision of the operating surgeon.
Understands the role of the first assistant under supervision of the circulating nurse.
Communicates patient condition to the RN and surgical team.
Maintains knowledge of all surgical procedures and assists throughout.
Positional and draping duties, clamping, tying, cauterizing, retractor use, suction, suturing, and wound closure as directed.
Displays tissue handling, exposure, instrument use, suturing, asepsis, and infection control skills.
Recognizes safety hazards and initiates corrective actions.
Displays advanced proficiency in surgical technology practice.
Capable of scrub role in all surgical specialties.
Maintains a professional attitude.
Adheres to punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and federal standards.
Compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of patient care techniques.
Engages in professional growth and continuing education.
Participates in orientation of new staff as a role model.
Reliable in performing Surgical Tech III duties and any required surgical tech role.
Education
High School diploma.
Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology program.
Successful completion of an accredited First Assistant training course with didactic and supervised clinical components.
Licensure/Certification
National certification as Surgical Technologist:
CST
by NBSTSA (renewed every 4 years) or
Tech in Surgery
by NCCT (renewed annually).
Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
Experience Three (3) years of recent diversified surgical technology experience.
