Senior Design Engineer (Des Plaines, IL) Acuity Inc. Position Summary The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for product development from concept through production, including new product development, sustaining, and field problem resolution. The role leads electro‑mechanical product design, redesign, part assembly, and detailed part drawings, as well as prototyping, testing, and sample assembly. The engineer collaborates cross‑functionally and leads various projects in a senior capacity.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead various aspects of the design process, including development of part geometry, assembly design, and drawing generation. Design work ranges from new product development to product enhancements and cost reduction activities.

Develop and distribute engineering data such as Engineering Change Notices, bills of material, and parts tracking.

Partner with manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests, and bill of material errors to keep lines running and produce quality product; conduct pilot/pre‑production runs.

Participate in or occasionally lead team meetings using the product delivery system (stage gate product development) for each major product.

Initiate and develop concepts for new products using Project Charters, Specification Matrix from the Product Manager, competitor samples, documentation, and free design techniques.

Ensure concepts are aligned with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate facility.

Continuously improve productivity, quality, purchasing, and manufacturing processes, sourcing new or alternate processes, equipment, and training resources while seeking advancements through trade shows, vendors, or other methods.

Submit test requests and engage with testing group as necessary; submit prototyping requests and work directly with the model shop for prototypes and sample assembly.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and 3‑5 years of experience.

Demonstrated understanding of engineering fundamentals.

Effective verbal, written, and visual communication skills through sketches and engineering drawings.

Proficient use of 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and PLM software (preferred Windchill), as well as Microsoft Office and related tools.

Understanding of manufacturing methods such as stamping, drawing, casting, and extruding metals and plastics.

Ability to influence and enlist cooperation of other team members to complete and implement new product development on time and on budget.

Knowledge of UL / CSA and testing processes is a plus.

Understanding and adherence to established industry and safety standards.

Capability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Availability to travel based on business needs, up to 5% (domestic and international).

Salary and Benefits The range for this position is $91,400.00 to $164,400.00. Placement within this range may vary depending on the applicant’s experience and geographic location. Acuity offers generous benefits including health care, dental coverage, vision plans, 401(k) benefits, and commissions/incentive compensation depending on the role.
