Metro Transit

is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and prior to Covid provided more than 80 million rides a year through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.

Metro Transit's Service Development Department

is responsible for planning, analyzing and scheduling existing and future bus and rail service schedules. Service Development department staff analyze, develop, recommend and implement improvements and innovations to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Metro Transit and regional transit service that support established regional transit policies and guidelines designed to increase ridership, reduce costs and balance route productivity and coverage.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: The Traffic Engineer/Senior Engineer will help design and implement effective transit advantages and transitway projects, leading to improved rider experiences and increased transit speed and reliability.

We are creating a six (6) month eligibility list for current and future openings.

What you would do in this job:

Assist in the planning, design, and implementation of transit infrastructure projects, including transitways, bus lanes, transit signal priority (TSP), and roadway reconstructions.

Review engineering designs and construction plans for consistency with Metro Transit’s operational goals and applicable technical standards such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Support the analysis of transit delays and the development of engineering-based solutions to improve transit speed and reliability.

Collaborate with internal departments, external agencies, consultants, and contractors to support project coordination and successful delivery.

Help monitor project budgets, schedules, and progress; identify potential issues and communicate them to project leads and management.

Conduct field evaluations and site inspections to verify compliance with design specifications and project requirements under the guidance of senior staff.

Prepare technical reports, documentation, and recommendations to assist management and project stakeholders.

Provide technical assistance and advice on transit infrastructure and transit advantage projects.

Support the development of requests for proposals (RFPs), contract negotiations, and oversight of consultant work related to transit projects.

Stay informed on best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to transitway and traffic engineering to support continuous improvement.

Engineer

Bachelor' degree in Engineering in the related area of discipline.

Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam within six months of hire.

Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam.

2 years of related experience as an Engineer

Senior Engineer

Bachelor' degree in Engineering in the related area of discipline.

Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) or Registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Minnesota or a state with reciprocity may be required for some positions. Note: FE exam replaces the former Engineering in Training (EIT) exam
