Under the direction of a RN, the Surgical Technician II works cooperatively with all surgical team members, functioning as a scrub assistant to the surgeon and assistant surgeon during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician II is knowledgeable about, skilled in, and coordinates at least one area of expertise in the Operating Room. The role involves adhering to all standards of care and promoting teamwork among coworkers. Core Competencies

Assists the circulating nurse in preparing the assigned operating room for surgery. Checks the surgeons' preference cards before beginning all surgeries. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to approved techniques. Practices aseptic technique in opening surgical packs, sutures, and trays. Maintains a sterile field throughout each surgical procedure. Performs sponge and needle counts according to policies/procedures. Provides health care services in own job category to various age groups as applicable. Assists the surgeon and assistant surgeon by passing instruments during surgical procedures. Checks medications used during surgical procedures with the circulating nurse. Reports any breaks in aseptic technique and restores sterile field. Handles and identifies specimens correctly; obtains surgeon’s permission before handing specimens off the sterile field. Reports to circulating nurse any drains or packing remaining in patients after surgery. Applies dressings to wounds and cleanses skin immediately following surgery. Assists in the transfer of patients from the surgical table to gurney. Operates surgical tables, lights, electro-surgical units, and instrumentation systems used during surgical procedures. Assists the circulating nurse in cleaning and preparing the operating room for subsequent surgeries. Maintains a safe working environment, ensuring equipment is properly secured and infection prevention guidelines are followed. Maintains confidentiality and exercises discretion when discussing patient information. Assists in maintaining a well-functioning unit by removing broken equipment and orienting new personnel. Supports other team members to distribute workload effectively. Participates in clinic activities, staff meetings, and committees as delegated. Participates in hospital performance improvement activities. Independently scrubs in 2 of 10 major specialties, including robotics, complex spine, ophthalmology, total joints, bariatric, GYN, endovascular, cardio-thoracic, neuro, burns, reconstructive plastic, and complex ENT. Maintains current skills through annual inservice, being a super user for new products/devices, and obtaining 7 CEUs per year. Education & Experience

Graduate from a school of Surgical Technology, military training for Surgical Tech, or have 2 years of acute care experience as a Surgical Tech. Four letters of recommendation from peers (two selected by employee and two by management). Compensation Range

$34.62 - $55.06 per hour
