Role Summary Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies seeks an entrepreneurial, hands‑on Operational Risk Manager to establish and lead the Risk Management Function from its foundation. Reporting to the Head of Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC), this high‑impact role is the foundational expert responsible for designing, implementing, and operationalizing a proactive risk framework across our dynamic, high‑technology environment. Working closely with the Head of GRC, you will establish RV Tech’s Risk Management function from the ground up. You’ll design and implement a strategic, enterprise‑wide risk framework that supports informed decision‑making and strengthens our risk‑aware culture. As RV Tech’s foundational risk expert, you’ll drive how the company identifies, manages, and leverages risk to achieve its business goals. Located in our Palo Alto, California office, this position offers a standard hybrid schedule with the expectation of being in the office three days a week.
Responsibilities
Design & Launch Enterprise Risk Management (ERM): Establish and operationalize the entire Risk Management Framework from the ground up, defining governance, policy, and accountability across the JV.
Drive Strategic Risk Integration: Serve as the SME and strategic advisor to leadership, proactively embedding risk considerations directly into core business processes (e.g., project planning, finance, and decision‑making).
Proactive Risk Intelligence: Partner with technical and operational leaders to systematically identify, assess, and prioritize strategic, operational, financial, and compliance risks in a dynamic, high‑technology environment.
Cross‑Cultural Synthesis: Navigate and unify the risk perspectives of two major organizations (Rivian and VW Group) to build a single, future‑proof risk strategy for RV Tech.
Champion Risk Culture: Build organizational capability by driving a risk‑aware culture through targeted coaching, training, and robust Key Risk Indicator reporting.
Qualifications
5+ years of progressive experience in Risk Management, with a focus on designing, implementing, and operationalizing comprehensive Enterprise Risk Management frameworks in dynamic, high‑technology environments (automotive, software, or tech sector preferred).
Demonstrated expertise in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks across multiple domains: strategic, operational, financial, safety, and compliance (e.g., ISO, regulatory standards).
Proficiency in data analysis and risk assessment methodologies.
Organizational, project management, strategic and operational planning skills with a deadline‑centric and action‑oriented mindset.
Strong leadership, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills and ability to successfully work with all levels of the organization.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on consciousness, clarity, and responsiveness.
Ability to navigate and synthesize risk perspectives from two major global organizations (Rivian and Volkswagen Group) to create a unified, future‑proof risk strategy.
Creative and solution‑oriented – willingness to come up with new ways to enable the risk program to be more effective.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., finance, business, economics, law). Advanced degree preferred.
Ability to travel, as required.
Pay Disclosure Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Palo Alto, California Based Applicants: $149,700 - $187,100 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
