Accountant – Watertown, MA – Hybrid
As an Accountant at VHB, you will play a key role in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing moderately complex cost and financial data to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable reporting of financial results. This role handles moderately complex issues and problems independently, while referring more advanced matters to senior team members.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Prepare and review reconciliations for VHB’s bank accounts (operations, accounts payable, payroll, employee expenses), ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Analyze indirect organizational operating expenses monthly to verify proper cost allocation and initiate corrections where applicable; conduct additional ad‑hoc analysis as needed.
Investigate monthly actual‑to‑budget cost variances of moderately complex cases, identifying drivers and ensuring accurate reporting results.
Perform balance sheet analyses to identify account components, cost trends, variances, and related findings that support management decision‑making.
Perform accrual projections and assist with developing reliable expense forecasts.
Prepare financial reports and monthly financial statements in accordance with accounting standards and internal requirements.
Support day‑to‑day research of accounting questions, invoice retrieval, and internal audit/tax compliance tasks.
Review project data to ensure revenue and expense coding accuracy.
Maintain thorough knowledge of accounting principles, methods, and procedures and apply them consistently.
Assist the manager with posting information, answering co‑worker inquiries, and mentoring less experienced accounting staff.
Assist with preparation for the year‑end audit and prepare tax work papers for auditors.
Participate in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
Perform all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.
Skills & Knowledge
Solid understanding of accounting and finance principles, methods, and procedures.
Strong Excel proficiency (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis) and comfort working with moderately complex spreadsheets.
Experience with accounting/financial systems preferred.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with demonstrated critical‑thinking skills.
Detail‑oriented, organized, self‑motivated, and able to manage multiple tasks independently while contributing effectively to a team.
Ability to research accounting questions, analyze scenarios, and ask probing questions to ensure accuracy in financial data.
Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level.
Minimum Qualifications
2–4+ years of related accounting or finance experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position is $70,000 – $90,000.
