Loomis Chaffee is seeking an experienced full-time Assistant Director of Campus Safety. The Assistant Director of Campus Safety will have a leadership role in the overall safety and security of the campus and community members. This person will ensure best practices for a holistic campus safety program, including supervision of security personnel, educational programming for the community, facilitation of emergency preparedness drills, assist with coordinating patrol and response procedures, and preventive safety measures to ensure effective and appropriate monitoring of campus. This person will work closely and collaboratively with Loomis colleagues and representatives from the local community, including emergency personnel, to implement best practices for independent school safety, recognizing the unique physical setting of our campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Patrol the campus to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, visitors and members of the community.
- Patrolling the campus on foot and by vehicle to ensure the campus buildings, facilities, grounds, and property are secure and safe by identifying and tending to safety and security related items.
- Perform general security functions of patrol, observation, and documentation of incidents.
- Working with Residential Staff, Deans, and other campus personnel to promote collaboration of a safe environment for residential students, day students, visitors, faculty and staff on campus.
- General knowledge of life safety, fire safety, and security procedures as it pertains to a co-ed boarding school and residential environment.
- Support the overall Physical Plant efforts to maintain and improve the facilities and grounds and support the overall mission of the Institute.
- Assist in parking for athletic and other events as required.
- Available for emergencies and scheduled off-hour work as needed; may be subject to call-out for events.
- Perform other work and additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in criminal justice or related field and supervisory experience in either local, state, or federal law enforcement
- Experience in campus safety at an independent school or college, or equivalent; understanding of and appreciation for student issues.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
- Certification in AED, CPR, and First Aid or willingness to be certified prior to beginning work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong organizational, supervisory, and collaborative skills.
- Working knowledge of campus safety best practices and compliance regulations; background in emergency management/crisis situations preferred.
- Working knowledge of fire and emergency response and safety systems.
- Demonstrate proper judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
- Demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality, display sensitivity to unique role security plays in a school setting.
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, has initiative, and be a self-starter.
- Demonstrated good organizational/priority management skills, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to analyze situations and information, consider the risks and implications and implement a plan of action.
- Able to work as a team member and effectively with assigned personnel including faculty, contractors, students.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to walking around campus, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds or platforms, lifting/carrying heavy objects and working in confined spaces.
- Must be able to perform duties at night and during inclement weather including rain, snow, extreme heat or cold.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- Willingness to perform other work as required by the department and the Physical Plant.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:
- Must possess a valid Connecticut drivers license.
- State of Connecticut certified security officer or ability to obtain the same.
- EMT or advanced first aid certification, CPR/AED or ability to obtain the same.
Working Conditions:
- Conditions will vary from indoor, outdoor, and field environments in all weather conditions.
- Have the ability to consistently stand/walk for up to 12hrs per day, frequently and repeatedly bending, twisting, reaching, and kneeling.
- Must be able to change work schedule as required by the workload, system operational requirements and respond on a 24-hour per day/seven day per week basis.
- Must be able to work additional hours on short notice (hours including evening, nights, weekends and holidays) in office and field settings through normal and severe weather conditions.
- Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
