Essential Functions and Responsibilities Loads, drives, and unloads a multitude of Water Division equipment (rolling stock) in a safe and prudent manner using lifting and hoisting equipment as provided.
Operates moderately complex construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment safely and efficiently in and out of traffic and under adverse climate conditions.
Assists repair crews with cleaning work areas, handling tools and material, traffic control, loading and unloading equipment and materials.
Routes deliveries to various crews in a logical order and stages deliveries on the truck for routed delivery.
Performs equipment checks and minor service to division equipment on a daily basis for safe and efficient operations.
Reports for duty as required with the required license wearing/using all appropriate safety gear as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the St. Louis and surrounding area and traffic laws of the City of St. Louis, the State of Missouri, and the State of Illinois.
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others, such as co-workers and the general public, within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from supervisors.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring of multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as, street sweepers, loaders, backhoes, double axle dump trucks, tank trucks, cement mixers, flushers, snow plows, hydraulic/air vacuums, and other department equipment. Ability to operate complex equipment and perform machinery general maintenance.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information such as work orders, operating instructions and schedules.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents and traffic hazards.
Qualifications One year of experience in the operation of heavy and specialized automotive equipment. OR successful completion of a Commercial Driver’s License training program. OR, an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License: Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License Class A CDL with air brake endorsement while employed by the City of St. Louis. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date and State where issued on the Employment Application.
Proof of successful completion of a CDL training program (if applicable) must be provided upon request.

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
