Incumbents in this position are responsible for repairing and maintaining water processing and distribution equipment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Inspects, repairs and maintains water plant and distribution equipment and components such as pumps, motors, valves, intake screens, sluice gates, compressors, feed lines and others.
Repairs and maintains overhead cranes and boats.
Designs, fabricates and installs piping and structural steel.
May occasionally use overhead cranes, rigging equipment, lifting equipment, and motor boats.
Utilizes Water Department equipment as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as hand and power tools, drills, saws, grinders, pullers, threading/tapping equipment, wrenches, welders, cutting torches and motor vehicles. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, equipment manuals, time sheets, tool catalogs, shop manuals and general operating manuals.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages, fractions and decimals; perform mathematical operations involving basic geometry.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents.
Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds.
Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors and shapes to follow color coded diagrams and clearly distinguish objects, sounds to detect malfunctioning equipment and tools.
Qualifications Some experience in repairing and maintaining a variety of heavy mechanical equipment that includes welding and pipe work; OR, successful completion of a welding, pipefitting, or millwright apprenticeship program; OR, some experience as a welder, pipefitter, or millwright.
License Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing the application and be able to present it upon request. Please note the type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application.

City Residence Preference Points City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
