to support the mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist will provide independent clinical support services within the

Transfusion Services Laboratory (TSL)

of the

Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM)

at the NIH Clinical Center. The TSL performs advanced serologic and molecular immunohematologic testing to support clinical diagnostics, transfusion medicine, and research programs. This role supports both patient care and the DTM’s mission to advance training, innovation, and safety in transfusion medicine.

Duties Include:

Perform complex serologic and molecular immunohematologic testing to support transfusion and clinical research.

Evaluate transfusion orders for appropriateness, ensuring compliance with screening and testing criteria.

Perform compatibility testing using automated and manual crossmatching methods.

Independently resolve routine red blood cell (RBC) antibody issues and assist with complex antibody problem-solving.

Prepare and manufacture blood components (e.g., frozen plasma, leukoreduced RBCs, buffy coats, pathogen-reduced platelets).

Conduct lot release, labeling, and quality control testing of blood components.

Manage blood inventories and coordinate import/export of blood components as needed.

Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, and automated systems.

Maintain detailed laboratory records, including equipment logs, testing data, and quality control documentation.

Adhere to all regulatory, safety, and quality assurance requirements.

Provide guidance or mentorship to fellows and trainees in the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship or Specialist in Blood Banking programs.

Full-time (40 hours/week), Monday–Sunday rotational shifts, including nights and holidays

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related health science field.

Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory science or medical technology training program.

Minimum of three (3) years of blood bank or transfusion laboratory experience in a clinical environment.

Certifications and Licenses

ASCP (MLS/MT/SBB) certification strongly preferred or equivalent eligibility.

Skills and Competencies

Strong knowledge of transfusion medicine principles and blood bank techniques.

Proficiency in quality assurance and compliance with FDA, AABB, and CLIA standards.

Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.

Effective communication (oral and written) and collaboration in multidisciplinary teams.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams).
