The Associate Director, Principal Gifts is part of the Principal Gifts and Venture Philanthropy team that cultivates relationships with alumni, patients, parents, corporations, foundations, and friends to secure private support for Dartmouth Health, its member institutions, and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts and Venture Philanthropy (AVP), the Associate Director engages in comprehensive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of principal gift level donors and prospects (capable of $5M+ over five years). The role partners with faculty, staff, alumni, and students to execute donor engagement strategies. As a strategic partner, the Associate Director designs and implements highly-personalized donor engagement experiences, supporting the AVP’s vision for principal gifts. The position delivers exceptional service, sets and meets program goals, and manages confidential information with discretion. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience. 7–10 years of fundraising experience. Understanding of the philanthropic process and relationship management. Writing and communications experience in higher education or non-profit preferred. Demonstrated donor communication writing experience. Exceptional written and verbal communication, negotiation skills. Strong customer/service orientation. Proven ability to work in a large, complex organization and tolerate ambiguity. Proven ability to communicate with a diverse audience. Exceptional planning, administrative, and organizational skills. Exceptional customer service skills with diverse constituencies. Flexibility and creativity. Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment. Discretion with sensitive and confidential matters. Commitment to diversity and inclusion. Brings joy and a sense of humor to work. Preferred Qualifications
5–7 years fundraising experience in a medical or academic environment. Responsibilities
Principal Gift Strategy and Relationship Management
Define and coordinate personalized cultivations and solicitations of principal gifts aligned with donor strategy. Develop tailored stewardship plans that highlight impact and ensure a high‑quality donor experience. Meet with the AVP and leaders to strategize cultivation and stewardship opportunities. Provide training and coaching of faculty and front‑line staff in pitching key funding priorities. Support the strategic engagement plan for identified principal gift prospects; write and submit contact reports. Foster collaboration with MHA and the Dartmouth College Development office to develop principal giving strategies. Provide high‑level personalized support for alumni and parents interested in Geisel and Dartmouth Health priorities. Travel as needed for events and engagement opportunities. Project Management
Design, create, and track cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship deliverables. Collaborate with stakeholders to source needed information. Manage logistics of major principal giving initiatives. Coordinate and manage Principal Gift projects. Writing
Provide input on gift proposals to support donor solicitation. Review and finalize briefing documents for leadership. Research, write, and edit collateral for principal gift donors. Research, write, and edit other donor communications. Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned. Driving
