Job Summary
Phlebotomist I performs daily phlebotomy activities of the Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-office Phlebotomy (IOP) accurately and on time. The person in this position interacts with the client, patients, and other PathGroup personnel in a professional and courteous manner and performs with confidence, both the forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
Essential Functions
Greets customers appropriately and treats all customers in a courteous manner.
Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
Collects specimens according to established procedures and explains the process clearly and courteously.
Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment before, during, and after the collection process.
Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids, tissue, and contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
Completes requisitions accurately.
Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer and maintains high level of accuracy.
Communicates with clients to confirm orders and obtain accurate billing information.
Researches test/client information utilizing lab computer system.
Matches requisition forms to specimen tubes and appropriately labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required.
Packages specimens for transport and stores them according to required temperature and procedures.
Maintains required records and documentation, including daily phlebotomy logs.
Assists with compiling monthly statistics and data.
Performs basic clerical duties, e.g., filing, faxing, and preparing mail.
Uses electronic data entry and records time in attendance software accurately.
Adheres to departmental, company and lab policies, including grooming, dress code, and lab coat requirements.
Maintains patient flow and uses time appropriately.
Displays courteous and professional behavior to clients, patients, and coworkers.
Answers the telephone in a friendly manner and documents pertinent information.
Communicates pertinent information/issues to supervisor or group leader for resolution.
Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort.
Ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair, reporting maintenance issues.
Assists with periodic inventory counts and reports shortages.
Uses proper PPE and follows all laboratory safety precautions.
Performs all responsibilities in alignment with industry best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect PHI and company data.
Familiar with and abides by the Corporate Compliance Program and all privacy and security policies.
