Executive Underwriter / AVP, Underwriting Director – Excess Casualty
Zurich North America is seeking an experienced Executive Underwriter or AVP/Underwriting Director to join our E&S team in locations such as Maitland, FL; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; or Houston, TX. This hybrid role partners with the manager to set a flexible schedule and requires a strong presence in the market through relationships with agents, brokers, national wholesalers, and key distributors.
Responsibilities
Proactively seek new account opportunities and manage existing renewal accounts.
Demonstrate specialized knowledge and expertise in underwriting excess casualty lines of business.
Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
Contribute to the development and completion of proposals.
Qualify accounts that meet the organization’s appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
Make agent/broker/customer and on‑site calls with a planned and well‑prepared purpose.
Negotiate terms & conditions and close deals.
Cross‑sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
Participate in sales team meetings related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
Engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90–120 days prior to effective date.
Develop strong broker and client networks related to industries underwritten by the business unit.
Executive Underwriter – Excess Casualty Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing role OR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 3+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing role OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 8+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support.
AVP / Underwriting Director – Excess Casualty Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing role OR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing role OR
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 12+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of E&S commercial insurance industry experience
Technical knowledge of excess underwriting with E&S
Established wholesale broker relationships (E&S brokers)
Creative problem‑solving skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Compensation Pay is based on role, location, skills, and experience. The combined salary range for this position is $98,500 – $215,000. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter is $98,500 – $165,000, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 15%. The proposed salary range for the Underwriting Director is $130,000 – $215,000, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 20%.
