Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform

Motional . The Data Platform team is the vital link between our company’s expansive data and the engineering teams that rely on it. We architect and operate the core services and infrastructure necessary to transform petabytes of raw data each month into actionable insights for our Machine Learning and Autonomy engineers. Responsibilities
Data Processing : Build state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure to meet the demands of our rapidly scaling fleet and sophisticated ML engineering requirements. Ensure core data pipelines are robustly engineered—performant, user‑friendly, and highly fault‑tolerant. Data Discovery : Work with ML and autonomy stakeholders to build a platform that combines cataloging data for search needs across our metadata stores, vector datastores, and various data warehouses. Data Lineage : Build and adopt a system that tracks the usage of all data at Motional, ensuring wide adoption and addressing customer pain points. Lead and provide mentorship to a team of engineers both technically and professionally. Manage and drive team timelines, project commitments, and roadmap deliverables. Take ownership and responsibility for mentoring engineers. Work closely with users, leadership, and stakeholders to align and coordinate product design and project execution. Build scalable backend services for data discovery and data lineage systems. Write high‑quality, maintainable code to process petabytes of data. Design, build, and maintain scalable data processing and access with cloud ETL technology. Qualifications
5+ years of professional experience as a data engineer or data pipeline engineer. BS or MS in Computer Science or related field. Strong development experience with Python and SQL. Expertise with AWS services and solutions (EKS, Lambda, ETL). Experience with distributed system design and development. Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, continuous delivery environment. Bonus Points (not required)
Prior experience managing small teams. Experience with Infrastructure Monitoring. Experience working in cross‑functional development teams. Prior experience with agentic workflows is a plus. Prior experience in autonomous vehicles (AV) is a plus. Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, including but not limited to specific skills, experience and expertise, role location, certifications, licenses, and business needs. The estimated compensation range listed in this job posting reflects base salary only. This role may include additional forms of compensation such as a bonus or company equity. Candidates for certain positions are eligible to participate in Motional’s benefits program. Motional’s benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with a company match, health savings accounts, life insurance, pet insurance, and more. Salary Range: $170,000 USD – $232,000 USD.
