Job Summary: We are seeking a Director of Substation Engineering to launch and grow our substation practice from the ground up. This role combines technical expertise, leadership, and entrepreneurial drive. You’ll be responsible for shaping the team, developing internal standards and processes, and leading the execution of substation projects for our clients. Key Responsibilities: Establish and grow Copper Roots’ substation engineering group, including hiring, mentoring, and developing a high-performing team. Define and develop design standards, procedures, and tools to support scalable and efficient project execution. Lead design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects for clients throughout the nation. Partner closely with leadership to align substation efforts with client and company goals. Serve as a technical leader and subject-matter expert for substation design and engineering. Support client relationships and business development activities, including proposals and pursuit strategies. Drive a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the group. Oversee recruitment initiatives, including participating in career fairs and conducting candidate interviews. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) strongly preferred. 10+ years of substation engineering experience, with leadership or management background. Demonstrated ability to build and grow teams, practices, or business lines. Strong knowledge of industry standards (NESC, IEEE, IEC, ANSI) and utility practices. Excellent communication and organizational skills, with an entrepreneurial mindset. Preferred Qualifications: Proven track record of building and scaling an engineering team or practice. Experience with emerging technologies in substations (digital substations, automation, protection & control). Business development experience, including direct client engagement and proposal leadership. Prior experience in an entrepreneurial or growth-stage firm.
