We are seeking a Director of Engineering to join our team and lead the engineering operations at Bernardus Lodge & Spa. This role is critical in ensuring a seamless guest experience and maintaining the asset in the best possible way. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, experience in project management, and a deep understanding of hotel engineering operations. As the Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining all engineering standards, managing the technical aspects of the property, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. You will also work closely with contractors, vendors, and hotel leadership to ensure a smooth operation. Finally, you will be a major contributor to our sustainability efforts by discovering opportunities for us to improve, supporting existing efforts and ultimately ensuring we are responsible hotel operators in our beautiful destination.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct thorough inspections of all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety) to identify and address any deficiencies or non-compliance issues.

Lead and coordinate room punch processes, ensuring all guest rooms, suites, and back-of-house areas meet operational standards.

Test and certify all critical equipment, including generators, emergency lighting, and life safety systems.

Work closely with contractors to resolve outstanding construction or system-related issues before full handover.

Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules and operational procedures.

Be familiar with Transcendent and Alice to manage work orders and PM’ing of equipment

Assist in recruiting and training the engineering team to ensure preparedness for ongoing operations.

Manage the engineering team and ensure all tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.

Develop and implement engineering strategies that align with the hotel’s operational objectives.

Ensure that all engineering projects are completed within budget and on time.

Must work with authorities having jurisdiction.

Maintain and update engineering standards in alignment with Forbes standards, procedures, , and preventative maintenance programs.

Oversee compliance with all safety regulations, fire codes, and environmental standards.

Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and maintenance personnel.

Collaborate with other departments to support operational needs and guest satisfaction.

Prepare accurate and timely reports as required.

Assists staff with job functions as needed to ensure optimum service to all guests.

Support safe work habits and a safe working environment at all times.

Obtain quotes for capex projects and work with the General Manager & Director of Finance on presenting quotes to ownership.

Manage multiple projects at the same time and remain organized as well as on schedule.

Perform all other duties that may be assigned as needed by your manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience as a Hotel Director of Engineering required

3-5 years of experience in hotel, institutional, or HVAC systems

HVAC certification and refrigeration experience required

Strong working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, life safety, and preventative maintenance systems

Budget management, cost control, and financial responsibility experience (stationary engineering license preferred)

Valid driver’s license required

Ability to communicate effectively with team members, contractors, and leadership

Experience in managing renovations of guest rooms, public spaces and all other areas of a hotel

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
