Brief Posting Description:

The Customer Energy Resources (CER) Program Engineer supports customer‑sited renewable energy programs at Hawaiian Electric. This role is ideal for an engineer experienced with smart inverters, PV systems, battery energy‑storage equipment, and integrating these devices with utility software programs. The position requires an engineering mindset, willingness to troubleshoot, and solid understanding of technical and software analysis and data integration. Ideal candidates combine technology expertise, data‑management skills, and strong communication abilities.

Job Function Serves as a resource for the IT infrastructure required to implement and support Demand Response (DR) and Distributed Energy Programs (DER) defined as CER initiatives. Acts as primary interface with aggregators and service providers for DERMS integration support and maintenance. Provides technical assistance to Program Managers and customers.

Essential Functions

Manages, implements, tests, and monitors CER applications and infrastructure (e.g., DERMS, CBRE, CIT), including integration with third parties and customer field devices.

Conducts technical studies, evaluations, planning, and engineering support in the development of CER programs.

Evaluates technical pilot opportunities, manages pilots, and develops performance metrics using engineering models, databases, and simulation tools.

Administers contracts with engineering consultants and vendors, oversees outside contractors, prepares RFPs for consultant services.

Supports regulatory filings related to CER programs and operations, including rate cases.

Provides consultation services and performs site/field surveys for residential, commercial, and industrial customers; makes on‑site visits to collect data.

Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements

Engineering or Computer Science degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) from an ABET‑accredited institution; or equivalent utility grid operations experience.

Detailed knowledge of engineering principles applicable to job responsibilities, including utility/DR/DER IT infrastructure, control systems, data acquisition, interval meters, and remote communications.

Working knowledge of utility operations or business systems, and of DR/DER operations and programs.

Knowledge of personal computers and standard software (Microsoft Office Suite).

Skills Requirements

Must be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.

Self‑starter with strong research, planning, organization, and report‑writing skills.

Independent research and creative problem‑solving abilities.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including oral, written, and listening.

Analytical, organizational, and planning skills to manage multiple projects concurrently.

Experience Requirements

Five or more years of engineering experience, or equivalent education and training.

Hands‑on experience managing projects and infrastructure; preferred IT project experience.

$87,400.00 – $111,500.00 based on skills and qualifications.
