Job Overview The Bed Board Controller assigns rooms to patients by checking physician service and diagnosis. They work closely with all floors throughout the hospital to ensure patient flow. Bed Board Controllers are proficient in registration and census/ bed management. Demonstrates precise documentation. They ask questions and record the required information. They must practice a culture of kindness, maintain a positive rapport and cooperative working relationship with all patients, guests, physicians, physicians' offices and fellow RWJBH employees.

Qualifications Required:

Clerical experience

Computer proficiency

Preferred:

High school diploma

Knowledge of medical terminology and diagnoses

Essential Functions

Management of Bed Census

Facilitates the bed management process throughout the institution

Monitors compliance with regulatory requirements as well as RWJUH policies and procedures, i.e., EMTALA, HIPAA

Maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of patient placement

Ensures the optimal usage of in‑patient bed resources is achieved within the parameters of defined policy, ensuring that each acute hospital bed is appropriately occupied. Particular attention is given to the availability of sufficient beds for emergency admissions and Transfer Center patients

Liaison and consultant with medical and nursing personnel in the discharge and transfer of all of the above functions, to ensure the efficient and effective maximization of the hospital bed base

Resolves problems and responds to special needs of the Cath Lab schedule as they relate to the transfer of patients

Projects and coordinates the number of elective and non‑elective admissions in order to optimize throughput. Recognizes potential throughput issues in advance and prepares alternate methodology processing

Acts as a resource for staff in managing the Bed Census area

Transfer Center Manager

Monitors and makes decisions about appropriateness of transfers utilizing clinical expertise and assessment skills

Manages and coordinates activities involved with the Transfer Center

Acts as a resource for staff in managing the Bed Census and Transfer Center

Organizational Work Role Competencies

Displays competence by following established policies and procedures and marketing hospital standards of care to patients and families.

Assisting in the orientation of new staff

Supports institutional guest relations initiatives

Contributes to the professional growth and development of personnel by continuously assessing patients to be transferred

Fosters Interdisciplinary Collaborative Relationships

Fosters an atmosphere of positive communication within the areas of Census management and Transfer Center

Maintains open lines of communication with physicians and staff nurses

Participates in daily bed meetings with Nursing Directors to facilitate bed management plans for the day as needed

Professional Development

Attending formal educational seminars/classes to enhance knowledge on both clinical and administrative issues

Participates in the orientation program of new Bed Managers

Maintains a cooperative working relationship among all departmental supervisory
