To counsel, assist and train individuals with developmental disabilities in the areas of personal care, travel skills, social skills, home management and life skills to maximize their functioning in the community.

Specialized Knowledge & Training

Specialized training in direct care provision preferred.

Must complete and obtain certification in OPWDD Approved Medication Administration Course (AMAP) during probationary period and maintain AMAP certification.

Ability and willingness to be First Aid and CPR certified.

Ability and willingness to obtain certification in SCIPR Competencies and advance to Promote.

Demonstrated competency in written, verbal and computational skills to document records in accordance with program standards.

Responsibilities

Support the individual by providing a comfortable home environment and encouraging growth.

Work towards satisfying completion of each core competency goal according to the OPWDD timeline requirements.

Provide a safe and clean environment based on skill level and support safety of all individuals.

Create a positive environment through verbal and physical means.

Assist in development of social skills for community integration.

Perform protective oversight during community activities.

Monitor personal health continuously.

Assist in learning and practicing home living skills (e.g., cooking, sweeping, bed‑making).

Perform advocacy responsibilities with respect.

Responsible for all documentation related to essential functions and services for the individual.

Provide regular physical care, including bathing, feeding, changing clothes or diapers, and pushing wheelchairs.

Restrain challenging behaviors (aggression, self‑injurious, destructive) when necessary.

Apply proper lifting techniques.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Speak clearly and hear spoken word well.

Use near vision to read data and documents.

Provide physical care for clients.

Work in office, education, residential, rehabilitation, workshop, or health‑related environments with typical noise levels and hazards.

Work with individuals ranging from childhood to adulthood.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED.

Minimum 1‑year experience working with developmental disabled population, preferably in a residential or treatment setting.

Valid NYS Driver’s License required.

Certification: OPWDD approved Medication Administration Course (AMAP); First Aid & CPR; SCIPR Competencies.
