Junior Specialist – Kirkwood Lab Division of Surgical Oncology

The Junior Specialist will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Kimberly Kirkwood, and in close coordination with the clinical research team to support biospecimen collection and biorepository activities for pancreatic cyst and cancer research studies.

Duties include:

Supporting general biorepository operations, including laboratory equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and adherence to biosafety and institutional guidelines.

Contributing to laboratory organization, protocol updates, and quality control procedures.

Assisting with the collection of human biospecimens (e.g., pancreatic cyst fluid, tumor tissue, blood) across multiple UCSF sites, including during EUS-FNA and surgical procedures.

Processing specimens according to established protocols, including labeling, aliquoting, storage, and preparation for downstream analyses.

Maintaining accurate and up-to-date specimen inventory and associated records in the laboratory database.

Coordinating specimen shipments to collaborating institutions and consortium biorepositories.

Assisting with patient recruitment and enrollment activities in compliance with IRB-approved protocols.

Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry or a related field or at least four years of research experience.
