The State Supported Living Centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. The Staff Physician performs highly advanced medical work, ensures delivery of high quality, integrated medical services, diagnoses and treats individuals with complex medical, psychiatric, and/or behavioral health needs, monitors medical services, develops healthcare plans, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, completes medical documentation, provides on-call duty, and works under the Medical Director’s supervision.
Essential Job Functions
Attend work regularly, may be required to work specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime; may serve in on‑call status as required.
Deliver and monitor high‑quality medical services to individuals with intellectual disabilities, diagnose and treat complex conditions, provide direction to the treatment team, and ensure proper integration of health‑care plans.
Oversee and monitor long‑term health status, provide chronic care including quarterly assessments, medication reviews, prescriptions, and referral for specialized treatments.
Provide acute care, daily assessments for acute health problems or injuries, oversee medical services by APRNs, PAs, RNs, and LVNs, conduct daily sick call clinics, prescribe medication when indicated.
Participate in interdisciplinary planning conferences and personal support team meetings, provide medical diagnosis and review treatment plans, evaluate efficacy, and adjust plans as needed.
Develop accurate documentation: annual summaries, pre‑procedural histories, physicals, reports for hospital transfers, and annual medical reports with objectives and laboratory analysis.
Consult with admitting physicians at local hospitals, review documentation to ensure continuity of care, follow up on changes.
Collaborate to achieve DOJ Settlement Agreement compliance, identify trends, provide input into improvement plans, assist with policy and equipment updates.
Provide treatment to HHS employees injured in scope of employment when needed; may participate in disaster response or COOP activation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of general medicine methods and principles for individualized care and treatment plans.
Knowledge of medical jurisprudence.
Knowledge of or ability to learn ICF‑IID standards, HHSC policies, and DOJ Settlement Agreement.
Skill in patient care, use of diagnostic tools and treatment equipment.
Experience practicing medicine.
Ability to maintain well‑being of individuals at campus and in hospitals.
Ability to respond to medical emergencies and on‑call duties.
Ability to communicate with nurses, care staff, and interdisciplinary team members.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing, work collaboratively with individuals, employees, and the community.
Ability to evaluate patients and implement effective treatment in coordination with other personnel.
Ability to maintain required continuing medical education hours.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
Licensed medical doctor by the State of Texas.
Current registration certificates from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
National Provider Identifier (NPI) and enrollment as Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider.
Initial Screening Criteria
Graduation from an accredited medical or osteopathic medical program with a medical doctor or osteopathic physician degree.
Experience leading, supervising, or managing the work of others (preferred).
Clinical experience.
Residency trained.
Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males 18–25 must register with Selective Service. All employees subject to random drug testing.
