Overview:

The Staff Physician at the SSLC performs highly advanced medical work and leads the medical care of individuals with intellectual disabilities and complex medical, psychiatric, and behavioral health needs. The physician develops comprehensive health‑care plans, coordinates multidisciplinary teams, and ensures compliance with Department of Justice Settlement Agreements.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

Attend work on a regular basis, with potential for on‑call status and rotating schedules as required.

Deliver high‑quality medical services, diagnosing and treating individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including those with complex comorbidities.

Develop, monitor, and adjust health‑care plans, ensuring they are properly implemented by the treatment team.

Provide chronic care, including quarterly assessments, medication reviews, and prescription management within licensing limits.

Oversee acute care and daily assessments, including sick‑call clinics and emergency responses.

Participate in interdisciplinary conferences and personal support team meetings, providing medical information to families and guardians.

Prepare accurate documentation—annual summaries, pre‑procedural histories, physicals, and reports for residents and the SSLC as a whole.

Consult with hospital physicians and review discharge summaries to ensure continuity of care.

Collaborate with the medical services department to meet DOJ Settlement Agreement requirements and improve policies, procedures, and equipment.

Provide treatment to HHS employees injury‑related to employment when required.

Engage in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) situations as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

In-depth knowledge of general medicine practices and individualized care plan development.

Medical jurisprudence, ICF‑IID standards, and HHSC policies.

Proficiency with diagnostic tools, treatment equipment, and medical record documentation.

Clinical experience and ability to maintain patient well‑being in hospital settings.

Capacity to respond to campus emergencies, communicate effectively with nurses and interdisciplinary staff, and articulate findings in oral and written formats.

Continuing medical education and adherence to licensing requirements.

Required Licensure and Registrations:

Licensed MD or DO in the State of Texas.

Current DEA registration and valid NPI number; enrolled with Medicaid and Medicare Part B.

Initial Screening Criteria:

Graduation from an accredited medical school or osteopathic program with an MD/DO degree.

Experience supervising or managing clinical staff (preferred).

Clinical experience and residency training.

Additional Requirements:

Background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, LEIE). Males 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service.

Random drug testing for all SSLC employees.

Willingness to work overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum age 18.
