Waste Sector Business Development Director
HDR, a leading engineering, design, and construction firm, seeks a strategic leader to steer client engagement and growth in the Waste sector. The role focuses on shaping solid waste infrastructure, driving sustainable solutions, and expanding HDR’s market presence globally.
What You’ll Do
Lead strategic growth, driving HDR’s market share and revenue in the Waste sector.
Build trusted client relationships, aligning HDR’s capabilities with customers’ goals.
Lead major pursuits and campaigns, developing winning strategies and guiding proposal efforts.
Collaborate with market and operations leadership to define and support regional strategic plans.
Mentor and train the business‑development team, fostering a culture of client focus and strategic thinking.
Align resources, ensuring the right talent and expertise are matched to client needs and growth opportunities.
What You Bring
Achieve global booking goals for the Waste Sector.
Manage regional Waste business development leaders.
Maintain a strong understanding of Waste market trends and drivers.
Create a vision for the Waste program with the Waste Sector Director.
Oversee annual and long‑term strategic plans, prioritizing growth initiatives.
Lead cross‑market strategic initiatives in the Regional Business Group.
Direct major pursuit teams to develop effective win strategies.
Identify candidates for management, technical, business‑development, and marketing positions.
Develop training on business‑development and marketing best practices.
Execute major client plans, including long‑term capture strategies.
Serve as Client Manager for key Waste sector accounts, maintaining deep client relationships.
Develop business relationships with teaming partners.
Participate in professional associations to enhance HDR’s brand in target markets.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Professional or engineering registration or relevant technical experience.
Proven experience winning high‑value contracts in the Waste industry.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 15 years relevant industry experience.
Self‑starter with a history of completing projects with limited oversight.
Deep knowledge of the A/E/C industry’s procurement approach.
Ability to motivate and inspire others.
Track record of building a network of clients and industry partners.
Experience in sales and developing effective win strategies.
Strong financial acumen and negotiation skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Willingness to travel and engage with clients in person.
Experience growing programs in new or highly competitive markets.
Experience crafting compelling content based on technical staff input.

The target salary range is $167,580 – $277,200, based on experience, education, and location.
