Under the supervision of the teacher, One-to-One Paraprofessionals will provide direct services to individual students and participate in daily instruction and activities within the school, program, and class to which the student is assigned. The duties of a One-to-One Paraprofessional are tailored to the specific needs of the student.
Students requiring a One-to-One Paraprofessional may have disabilities or diagnoses including pervasive developmental disorder, autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Williams' Syndrome, physical handicaps, multiple handicaps, blindness, deafness, Tourettes' Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychiatric disorders (psychosis, schizophrenia, multiple personalities, depression), oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, conduct disorder, genetic disorders, and brain injury. They may also speak languages other than English.
Reports To: Principal/Head of Schools/School-based SPED Administrator
Responsibilities
Assist with small group instruction, toileting, diapering, lifting and transfers, maintaining personal hygiene, supporting the school nurse with tube feedings, scribing, note-taking, using communication systems (such as ASL, SEE 2, Picture Exchange System, communication boards), Braille, Applied Behavioral Analysis, behavior management, redirection, de-escalation, and physical restraint.
In some cases, the position may require a specific gender due to the nature of the work (e.g., toileting) or the student's history, to ensure safety and comfort for both parties.
Students may be assigned to any district school, including examination schools, and may participate in advanced coursework requiring assistance from a Paraprofessional.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement lesson plans and activities.
Maintain open communication with parents and staff.
Perform additional duties as requested by administrators, especially during student absences.
Qualifications - Required
High School Diploma or GED
Forty-eight (48) college credit hours or an Associate's Degree, or passing scores on the ParaPro Assessment ( http://www.ets.org/parapro/ ) or WorkKeys Certificate ( http://www.act.org/workkeys/profcert/index.html ).
Experience working with students with disabilities listed above.
Ability to work effectively with parents, guardians, administrators, teachers, and students.
Experience in team instruction.
Flexibility to meet student and parent/guardian needs.
Training in ABA.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. from the first day of employment.
Additional qualifications may be required based on the student's needs.
Qualifications - Preferred
Fluency in languages other than English, especially BPS's official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean and Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Somali, is highly valued.
