This is a Part-Time Continuing Education Workforce Development (CEWD) instructor pool for available assignments during the academic year.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include working days, evenings and/or weekends.

May require travel to our main campus in Alvin and/or to various offsite locations, including local high schools in Alvin, Danbury, Manvel and Pearland and to Texas Department of Criminal Justice facilities in Richmond, Rosharon or Lake Jackson.

Requires the provision of official transcripts, licenses and/or certifications within (30) days of hire.

All international credential evaluations must be conducted by one of the companies affiliated with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
SUMMARY

The Instructor will teach a variety of courses and provide quality instruction in a safe environment to students within the Phlebotomy Program. The position prepares and provides lecture, laboratory, and clinical instruction according to the required curriculum established by Alvin College. This position requires the individual to follow the current course outlines, objectives, evaluation mechanisms for the medical assisting program and procedures within the classroom and laboratory. The instructor constantly evaluates their effectiveness in the classroom by helping students obtain course learning outcomes and the impact that they have on student retention in the Phlebotomy Program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
  • Teaches a variety of phlebotomy courses which may be scheduled days, nights, weekends and/or online
  • Provides educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled class times
  • Provide classroom and clinical instruction using a variety of teaching strategies to achieve course and program learning outcomes
  • Observes students in the clinical setting as needed
  • Prepares and distributes course outline / syllabi to students
  • Maintain relationships with clinical affiliates to ensure excellent learning opportunities for students
  • Maintains a time and effort report of daily activities for grants reporting
  • Recommends and identifies programs and/or course improvements as needed to the CEWD Director of Health Programs
  • Participates in curriculum development and/or revisions as needed
  • Participates in textbook selection as needed
  • Identifies and reacts promptly, appropriately, and decisively in correcting safety issues
  • Monitors and documents student attendance/retention
  • Complies with CEWD department and Alvin College policies and procedures
  • Participates in program meetings
  • Grades assignments, returns graded assignments, and assigns final grades for all students in a timely manner
  • Monitors all equipment and supply inventory and makes recommendations to the CEWD Director of Health Programs for purchases
  • Secures consumable supplies as well as educational materials after class in a secure location
  • Assists Alvin College in the marketing of the Phlebotomy Program
  • Analyzes, reports and updates the CEWD Director of Health Programs on the outcome of course learning objectives and overall course progress
  • Assists in the resolution of student issues in the courses being taught
  • Adheres to Alvin College's policies and procedures
  • Attends institutional meetings as required
  • Other related duties as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent typically works in an office and classroom environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current licensure or certification as a Phlebotomy Technician
  • One (1) year work experience as a Phlebotomy Technician
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Basic proficiency in online tools such as Blackboard
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, co-workers, and supervisor
  • Ability to establish and maintain detailed classroom records and reports relating to course instruction.
  • Have the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching thus enabling students to reach to the program's learning outcomes
  • The instructor will frequently perform autonomously and must be self-motivated
  • Will be required to proceed with independent actions with mutually established guidelines and minimal supervision from the CEWD Director of Health Programs
  • Must be flexible with the ability to work days, nights, and/or weekends with the understanding that available hours will be based on the needs of the program not to exceed 19 hours per week
  • Must be flexible and understands a minimum number of hours is not guaranteed and that classes may be cancelled and/or rescheduled with minimal notice due to student need, student enrollment and/or program needs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree in Medical Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution and current licensure or certification preferred
  • Two (2) years of previous teaching experience, preferably at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Two (2) years of previous clinical experience in supervising students
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
