Duties Description
Psychiatrists are essential to providing mental health services, delivering comprehensive and recovery‑oriented psychiatric treatment services built on principles of effective, measurable, and accountable care.
As medical doctors, psychiatrists ensure that all services are integrated to promote mental and physical health and recovery.
Psychiatrists serve as primary prescribers for psychopharmacology, an integral component of modern mental health treatment.
Assistant Psychiatrists assist in providing psychiatric care and treatment services to individuals under the direct supervision of a licensed psychiatrist or physician.
Psychiatrists 1 diagnose, treat, prescribe, and provide psychiatric care and treatment services to assigned individuals under the direction of a higher‑level psychiatrist or physician.
Psychiatrists 2 independently diagnose, treat, prescribe, and provide psychiatric care and treatment services to assigned individuals; provide clinical supervision and guidance to lower‑level psychiatrists, physicians, and/or other medical providers; and may manage care and treatment services for an assigned facility, unit, or program.
Minimum Qualifications
License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State.
Certification in psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
Applicants from outside the State Service: qualified under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement – Statewide (HELPS) program.
Applicants from within State Service: eligible for competitive class appointment with one year of permanent competitive or 55‑b/55‑c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Psychiatrist 1: completion of a training program in psychiatry approved by ABPN.
Psychiatrist 2: certification in psychiatry approved by ABPN.
Additional Comments
Psychiatrists at OMH facilities are eligible for the Psychiatry Loan Repayment Program offering up to $120,000.
Supplemental income of up to 50% of salary by volunteering to provide evening, night, and weekend coverage.
Defense and Indemnification Protection—broader in scope than typical medical malpractice coverage.

This position is at Central New York Psychiatric Center's Fishkill Satellite Unit located on the grounds of Fishkill Correctional Facility in Dutchess County.
