Job Summary — Under the direction of the Nursing Director, or his/her designee, performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties and services on the nursing unit. Provides assistance for nursing personnel and medical staff to enhance the overall environment of the nursing unit. Performs other duties as assigned. Demonstrates working knowledge of all appropriate computer systems. Responsibilities
Perform a variety of clerical & administrative duties.
Record and type unit council minutes.
Conduct safety checks as designated by the department director.
Initiate and maintain patient records according to policy.
Demonstrate competence in using current computer systems.
Post diet restrictions and NPO restrictions on lab work, etc.
Keep census up-to-date.
Identify patient per hospital policy.
Ensure that patient’s medical record accompanies patient to ancillary departments.
Oversee prompt delivery of specimens to appropriate department.
Perform safety rounds at the frequency determined by the Nursing Director.
Ensure medical records & x-rays are copied for transfer to other facilities.
Greet all patients and visitors to the unit in a positive manner and direct them to the appropriate destination.
Demonstrate appropriate telephone etiquette.
Document in a legible and concise manner.
Spell all words and terms correctly.
Document allergies in accordance with policy.
Demonstrate competency with unit‑specific equipment.
Notify appropriate personnel and departments of patients transferred to a different room or received from another unit.
Assist others in orientation to clerical duties.
Communicate appropriate referral of issues or concerns to manager, director or designee in a timely manner.
Complete unit specific competencies.
Qualifications
High School diploma (or equivalent) and computer data entry skills.
Clerical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit for 3–7 hours, twist and bend frequently; standing, walking, squatting, kneeling are not essential functions.
Must be able to lift 10–35 lbs with good body mechanics.
May be left or right handed but able to pinch, deviate wrist frequently, and have fine motor skills.
Near vision must be accurate at 20/20 and far vision accurate at 20/40; must be able to discriminate among red, green and white and have moderate depth perception.
Must be able to hear a whisper at 20 feet.

Location: Newport Hospital – 11 Friendship Street, Newport, Rhode Island 02840
Work Type: Three 8‑hr shifts 06:30‑15:00, every other weekend/holiday
Work Shift: Day
Daily Hours: 8 hours
