Job Summary Under supervision of nurse managers and according to established policies and procedures, this position provides clerical support to patient care activities in the Emergency/Trauma Center. Responsibilities include assisting patients and families undergoing or awaiting treatment, contacting physicians, preparing treatment request forms, and operating an online computer terminal. Core Success Factors Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate Responsibilities Receive and direct communications such as incoming calls from police, media, rescue drivers, physicians, and others. Handle or reroute calls per department policy; initiate related forms and/or records. Communicate with patients or families to provide general information regarding department operations or to request a return to the hospital and relay patient status as directed. Contact private physicians, medical examiners, and others as required; receive and respond to requests for paging of physicians and other hospital personnel including administration, maintenance, and security. Operate telephone and radio beepers according to established paging procedures and referring to standing reference lists as needed. Upon request, notify appropriate security agency of emergency treatments resulting from assaults, gunshots, animal bites, accidents, and the like, in accordance with state Department of Health regulations. Greet patients in pediatric or walk‑in clinics and direct them to treatment areas following department guidelines. Complete physician orders for diagnostic tests and/or treatments/therapies; utilize an online computer terminal to access the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Use the Patient Managed Access System (PMAS) to enter, access, and update patient and related hospital data such as orders, patient status, and medical record information; maintain the list of patients and update as needed. Record patients placed on the "danger" list and inform appropriate staff, including telephone operators and Management Admitting; update computerized records to maintain department operating statistics. Ensure Emergency Department patient records are complete upon discharge, file charts according to procedure, and copy and distribute charges to designated areas. Assist the quality assurance program by receiving, sorting, distributing, and filing x‑rays, laboratory reports, and other test results and charts. Perform other clerical duties such as ordering supplies, preparing schedules, and reviewing records to obtain information related to a variety of studies. Maintain knowledge of the Emergency Disaster Plan. Route maintenance of fax machine, copier, printers, and other office equipment. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Well‑developed interpersonal and communication skills to obtain and relay patient information under stressful conditions. Knowledge of department procedures and medical terminology and the ability to operate online computer terminals. Three to six months of responsible work experience, preferably involving patient contact and knowledge of medical terminology. Familiarity with computers preferred. No supervisory responsibilities. Pay Range US $20.48–$20.98 per hour.
