The Watermen’s Museum is dedicated to interpreting, promoting, and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay. Funded by memberships, donations, grants, and fundraising events, the Museum provides a range of engaging programs and experiences. Its offerings include indoor and outdoor exhibits, educational programs, art, music, reenactments, and community events. The Museum actively supports York County Public Schools and other educational organizations, hosting thousands of children annually for historical and environmental field trip programs. Role Description
The Executive Director, a full-time, on-site role based in the Hampton Roads, Virginia Metropolitan Area, will oversee the operations and strategic direction of The Watermen’s Museum. Responsibilities include managing staff and volunteers, developing and executing programs, fundraising, building community partnerships, and ensuring financial growth and sustainability. The Executive Director will also create and implement public programs, coordinate with education and community groups, and lead initiatives to promote the Museum’s mission. Additionally, the role requires representing the Museum in the local community and fostering relationships with stakeholders.
Qualifications
Leadership and management experience, including staff supervision, program development, and operational oversight
Demonstrated expertise in fundraising, grant writing, and building donor and corporate relationships
Strong ability in public relations, community outreach, and partnership development
Excellent communication, organizational, and strategic planning skills
Knowledge of cultural heritage preservation and museum operations is preferred
Understanding of educational programming and event coordination
Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, History, Nonprofit Management, Education, or related field; advanced degree preferred
Passion for preserving and promoting local history and heritage
