What You Will Do The Pit Technologies (PT) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the operational group at the forefront of plutonium pit manufacturing and surveillance, enabling the modernization and continued stewardship of the United States' thermonuclear weapons stockpile. This position is assigned to the Tooling Design Team within the Engineering and Product Support Group (PT-5) of PT Division. The team's primary mission is to design tooling and equipment for all aspects of the pit production flowsheet.

Designer/Drafter 2 $53,700 - $82,500 As a designer/drafter assigned to the Engineering and Product Support Group you will support the development of tooling and equipment for all Pit Technologies groups and operations, primarily through CAD modeling and drafting. You will work closely with other Pit Technologies product engineering, design, and fabrication personnel in a dynamic and collaborative work environment to supply your customers with timely and novel tooling designs that are fit for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility. You will be expected to work independently and be self-directed in determining technical objectives of assignments, which you may complete without established procedures. Yet you will also work as a part of a high-performing team, while contributing to continuous process improvement initiatives to better meet customer requirements.

Designer/Drafter 3 $64,700 - $101,400 As a designer/drafter 3, you will be expected to perform all of the functions of the lower level but with greater proficiency.

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Computer-aided Design

Experience in use of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and product data management (PDM) software tools used to produce models, drawings, layouts and sketches of components or systems

Working level understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent

Fundamental understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function.

Mechanical/Machining

Fundamental understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to a mechanical, electro/mechanical or electrical disciplines.

Fundamental knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms.

Fundamental understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment

Fundamental understanding of machine shop equipment like mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment

Fundamental understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture.

Teamwork

Ability to work on diverse teams, collaborating on novel designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technicians.

Additional Job Requirements for Designer/Drafter 3

Intermediate level knowledge and proficiency in the above skills and knowledge areas.

Education and Experience (Designer/Drafter 2) Position requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education and Experience (Designer/Drafter 3) Position requires an Associate's Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 3 years of related experience, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink.

ASME GDTP Technologist Certification (ASME Y14.5-2009) (higher level only)

Active DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent).

Work Location The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
