Job Summary
The UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center provides multidisciplinary medical and supportive care to patients and their families with cancer. The genetic counselor works closely with medical providers to evaluate patients and families who may be at high risk for hereditary cancer. The role involves research and teaching objectives, tracking data, reporting outcomes, leading grant‑writing and performance improvement initiatives. A Genetic Counselor III candidate will have experience co‑managing a clinical sub‑service of the Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program or at least five years of experience in cancer genetics, and the demonstrated ability to function independently.
Location and Work Style Both the Mount Zion and Mission Bay campuses (San Francisco, CA). The position requires travel to Bay Area satellite locations and affiliate hospitals with distances up to 50 miles. Fully on‑site, days, 8‑hour shifts, Monday‑Friday.
Salary Hourly rate $56.46 – $94.73. Final salary determined by work experience, internal equity, and UC policy. Union positions are governed by the collective bargaining agreement.
Classification Genetic Counselor 2 or 3, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Credentialing All Advanced Health Professionals must be credentialed through UCSF Medical Staff Services Office prior to starting. Credentialing and approval takes 30‑60 days and must be completed before day one of employment.
Required Qualifications
Computer skills and basic statistics knowledge
Strong written, oral communication and people skills
Ability to create and deliver professional presentations
Experience providing consultation in oncology and availability to respond to consult service across all clinical programs
Genetic Counselor III level requires co‑management of a clinical sub‑service of the Cancer Genetics and Prevention Program or at least five years of experience in cancer genetics and the demonstrated ability to function independently
Preferred Qualifications
Oncology background
1–2 years of clinical experience
License / Certification
