Pharmacy Medication Access Coordinator - Specialty Pharmacy, Hybrid Boston Medical Center (BMC) provides a specialty pharmacy service to serve the complex medication needs of its chronic patients. BMC Specialty Pharmacy offers a comprehensive service program that includes an on‑site pharmacy staffed by Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Liaisons, and Medication Access Coordinators. As a Medication Access Coordinator, you will provide integrated support to patients and pharmacists by delivering a “hands‑on” approach to patient care. This role is essential to the growth and maintenance of the specialty pharmacy line and is at the core of supporting the health system’s operating margin. You will work closely with patients, providers, payers, and clinic staff to ensure seamless medication acquisition and adherence.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Patient Relationship Development and Client Sales

Manage and grow the patient account base by recruiting and retaining specialty pharmacy services driven through BMC Health System.

Meet target goals for patient recruitment and retention.

Follow up on leads from clinics and generate new leads through provider relationships or direct customer service engagements.

Patient Retention

Encourage clinic patients to use BMC pharmacy for its superior patient‑care services.

Deliver a continuum of medication‑adherence support using BMC tools and applications.

Ensure patient outcomes by triaging needs to the pharmacist and providing outbound therapy/medication‑adherence check‑ups.

Boost customer loyalty through exceptional care and a positive experience.

Personnel Responsibilities

Build and maintain relationships with providers, care teams, and ancillary support to sustain sales and recruitment functions.

Integrate with clinic staff to represent the pharmacy department and manage medication needs for patients seen in the clinic.

Train, mentor, and support colleagues in operational activities.

Maintain interdepartmental relationships to ensure seamless patient‑care transition from clinic to pharmacy.

External Relationships

Develop trusting relationships with patients, payers, and manufacturers to aid medication access and patient care.

Operational Responsibilities

Provide operational oversight and serve as an area expert for hospital leadership.

Coordinate care across patient needs, including lab and appointment follow‑up for medication access and adherence.

Process orders, forms, and applications such as prior authorizations, copay assistance, and financial‑service referrals.

Advocate for patients to achieve health goals by reducing medication‑access barriers.

Interpret and pull clinical documentation to meet payor criteria for drug approvals.

Navigate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to answer questions and provide documentation for prior authorizations.

Communicate proactively with providers, pharmacy management, Medical Directors, and Practice Managers about ongoing initiatives.

Resolve high‑level patient‑care issues and involve managers or clinicians as appropriate.

Work independently, managing workload and meeting established goals in a fast‑paced environment.

Education & Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.

AA or BA preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy or hold a Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern License.

Active National Certification verified by PTCB or ExCPT.

Experience

4–5 years of pharmacy experience.

Pharmacy interns must be in their second year.

Knowledge and Skills

Excellent oral and written English communication skills, including professional telephone communication.

Strong interpersonal skills to provide personalized customer service and advocate for patients.

Organized, detail‑oriented, capable of multitasking and prioritizing, dependable, empathetic, and goal‑oriented.

Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of social, racial, and ethnic populations.

Discretion and confidence with highly sensitive, private data.

Ability to understand, explain, and actively promote the hospital’s objectives through direct coordination and commitment to program goals.

Flexible to adapt to departmental needs, including assisting team members and adjusting assignments.

Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and quickly learning other relevant applications.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of transplant, hepatitis C, infectious diseases (including HIV), oncology, or other specialty medication therapies.

Bilingual or multi‑lingual skills beyond English.

Experience with prior‑authorization submission to third‑party payors.

Familiarity with 340B drug program and ACO hospital models.

Knowledge of QS1/NRx, EPIC, Salesforce, and Navinet.

Compensation Range $22.36 – $31.25 per hour. The range is based on minimum job qualifications and is subject to modification based on geographic location and additional factors such as education, experience, and certifications.
