RN Operating Room Nurse – Full Time Shift: 11:00 am – 9:30 pm (Day) with on‑call. Sign‑On Bonus: $25,000.00. Salary Range: $75,108.80 – $133,099.20.

Job Overview The Operating Room Nurse provides patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and the policies, values, and mission of Children’s National. The RN monitors and manages the patient and operative environment during surgery to maintain a safe environment, optimize outcomes, and maximize available resources. All nursing practice is based on legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The RN is an independent practitioner who functions as an identified resource to staff in the patient care area, incorporates the health‑care team in planning, delivers comprehensive patient care, handles emergency situations, and demonstrates evidence‑based practice through participation in unit projects and activities.

Responsibilities

Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intra‑operative patient care plans.

Serve as communication liaison to patients, families, and members of the operating team.

Prepare the operation room, assemble equipment, supplies and implants, and ensure equipment is functional and supplies are available.

Deliver peri‑operative patient and family‑centered care using the nursing process, providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence‑based care.

Utilize outcome data at the patient level to inform care decisions.

Participate in quality improvement activities and use quality measures to assess individual and unit performance.

Provide direct guidance and oversight of the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities, ensuring adherence to documentation standards and policies.

Participate in unit shared governance initiatives to improve patient care and throughput.

Navigate and document in the EMR to support patient care.

Work within scope and delegate per the Nurse Practice Act.

Actively participate in Universal Protocol and timeout, including the fire risk assessment with the surgical team prior to the start of the procedure.

Complete the post‑procedure pause at the conclusion of each surgical case.

Understand the purpose of positioning devices, use them correctly, and follow policy to protect the patient from injury.

Follow instrument count policy and initiate corrective actions when counts are incorrect.

Verify medication concentrations, expiration dates, and other medication details in coordination with the sterile field, surgeon, and anesthesia provider.

Communicate observations or concerns about unsafe situations that pose a risk to patients, families, or the healthcare team.

Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation.

Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision‑making.

Demonstrate accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication.

Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and co‑workers.

Pay attention to detail and practice the STAR (Stop, Think, Act, Review) method.

Assist the surgical team with emergency situations.

Arrive to the unit on time.

Handle difficult situations appropriately.

Utilize downtime constructively.

Comply with departmental policies and procedures.

Consistently participate in staff meetings and in‑services to improve skills.

Complete, document, and report all mandatory education and training.

Initiate ways to improve operations through quality improvement and implement related solutions.

Serve as a resource for current and new information or changes in the specialty area.

Mentor and precept new nurses in clinical specialties.

Contribute to Magnet re‑designation through participation in committees, task forces, and community outreach.

Model critical thinking skills by problem‑solving patient care and unit/system issues.

Communicate a plan of care and advocate to meet patients’ needs; suggest resolution of system issues.

Model procedures for escalation of issues and utilize the chain of command.

Demonstrate a collegial and respectful relationship with peers, physicians, and other departments.

Demonstrate proper use of identified hand‑off processes; follow up on inconsistent practice related to handoff.

Take the lead in implementing change and support management decisions.

Proactively plan for educational needs and verify with patient and family throughout stay and prior to discharge.

Excel in organizational skills, adjust for changes, and complete assignments on time.

Qualifications Minimum Education

Associate’s Degree from an approved school of nursing (Required).

Bachelor’s Degree BSN (Preferred).

Minimum Work Experience

At least 2 years of operating room experience (Required).

At least 2 years experience in at least two of the following specialties: Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Orthopedics–Spine, General Surgery, Colorectal, ENT, DaVinci Robotic, Kidney Transplant (Required).

1 year Pediatric OR experience (Preferred).

Required Skills/Knowledge

Successfully complete hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National.

Excel in organizational skills, adapt to changes, and complete assignments on time.

Maintain proficiency in at least three of: General Surgery, Colorectal, Kidney Transplant, ENT, Orthopedics/Orthopedics‑Spine, Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, Urology/DaVinci‑Robotic, Plastic, Oral Maxillofacial, GI.

Basic computer skills and ability to learn new technology.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Registered Nurse licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia (depending on location) – (Required).

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) – (Required).

Certified Nurse OR (CNOR) – (Preferred).
