Overview
Ambulatory Patient Care Tech- Shepard Park - (250002W6) Responsibilities
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team under the direction of the Registered Nurse to perform basic nursing care activities and maintain a safe, clean, stocked patient care setting; assist staff and help direct patient flow. Collect data and accurately document information for meaningful use, including chief complaint, current medications, allergies, tobacco/smoking history and smoke exposure; accurately obtain vital signs (TPR, BP), height, weight and head circumference; orient the family to the clinic environment and paperwork at the time of the visit. Recognize abnormalities and report to the Registered Nurse or Provider; assist in screening patients for pain using appropriate pain scales; recognize indicators of abuse and neglect and escalate positive findings to the Registered Nurse or Provider; recognize and assist any child in distress and institute Basic Life Support procedures when necessary; escalate to the Registered Nurse or Provider for positive screens. Provide basic nursing care (e.g., nourishment, assist patient with ambulating, escort patient at discharge). Check and ensure equipment (scales, stadiometers, vital signs machines, otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, oxygen, suction, etc.) are in working order; perform corrective actions as needed and inform the appropriate person of repair needs. Collect specimens for testing according to policy and procedure and/or perform specific testing per clinic assignment (including POCT, lab draws as applicable). Inform patient/guardian of collection process; inform family of other clinical resources; offer brochures for specific health care needs. Meet Joint Commission/DOH documentation requirements for the clinic area and complete required clean sweeps weekly. Maintain patient flow and unit efficiency by keeping a neat, orderly environment and preparing exam rooms; prioritize tasks and complete or report if unable to complete a task; obtain equipment and supplies and maintain PAR levels; monitor waiting room and inform families of delays; provide directions to lab, radiology, cafeteria, etc.; identify children/families with special needs (e.g., child on stretcher, oxygen use, isolation). Communication
Contribute to a positive work environment and confer with appropriate personnel about unanticipated or unfamiliar problems. Greet patient/family, recognize different education levels, adjust to meet families’ needs, address anxiety, adapt to different personalities and emotions; monitor and report concerns or complaints to the Clinic Manager; maintain a courteous, calm, comforting, and professional demeanor with patients/guardians and the multidisciplinary team. Laboratory Competency
Perform, evaluate and report QC protocol; identify and resolve QC failures; document resolutions; report problems to the main lab and/or supervisory staff. Participate in continuing education opportunities; perform competency and proficiency challenges in a timely manner. Process specimens by centrifugation, allocate and sort into specific test areas and storage; coordinate specimen pick-up and delivery; troubleshoot specimen-processing procedures. Investigate and handle improperly labeled specimens, requisition problems and inadequate specimens; answer general information and specimen requirement questions; route technical questions to the appropriate area for answers. Monitor and maintain daily records of laboratory equipment; maintain simple lab equipment and notify main lab/supervisor of unresolved problems; order routine lab/POCT inventory and supplies. Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary method; conduct routine tests such as urine dipstick, glucose, A1C. Self Responsibility
Follow directions precisely and maintain confidentiality. Attend in-services; be active in personal educational development; develop annual goals and a personal education program with the supervisor; complete CHEX requirements. Maintain satisfactory time and attendance; complete all Occupational Health requirements; maintain/obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; maintain certifications or licensure as required by the practice jurisdiction (e.g., DC, Maryland, Virginia).
