Position Summary

The employee(s) hired for this position will serve as part of a temporary pool of reserve Police Officers for UNC Asheville. As a central part of the university community, the mission of University Police is to contribute to and promote the greater mission of UNC Asheville by facilitating a safe, secure and service-oriented environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. University Police Officers conduct law‑enforcement activities including patrolling, criminal investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, parking and traffic control, and providing security at special events.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the geographic jurisdiction of the university campus.
  • Conduct criminal investigations and crime prevention.
  • Assist motorists, provide parking and traffic control.
  • Provide security at special events.

Salary

$25.00 per hour

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Current possession of North Carolina BLET Certification.
  • At least two years of campus law‑enforcement experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possession of technical skills or knowledge in a specific area and ability to stay current with developments.
  • Ability to present information to individuals or groups effectively.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.
  • Understanding of the organization’s mission, work units, and impact of decisions on the community.
  • Ability to identify problems, evaluate solutions, and actively resolve issues.
  • Ability to collect and compare data from multiple sources and identify alternatives.

Work Schedule and Hours

This is a temporary, part‑time reserve officer position. Up to 40 hours per week based on departmental needs.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Position requires certification as a law‑enforcement officer or ability to obtain it within one year. A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required at the time of application and before appointment. Selected candidates must undergo a background investigation including, but not limited to, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen. Skill demonstrations may be requested of all applicants interviewed. Applicants may withdraw from this pool at any time. Documents submitted to Human Resources become property of UNC Asheville and will not be returned. Official transcripts may be verified by Human Resources; expenses for transcripts are the employee’s responsibility. New employees are paid only through direct deposit.
