POLITICAL SCIENCE (BL-POLS-IUBLA)

Our nationally ranked Political Science department is one of the oldest in the nation, established in 1914. We provide a world‑class education in all aspects of political science. We teach courses in American politics, the politics of countries around the world, the politics between nations and international actors, political philosophy, and research methodology. Our students are engaged in political life in Indiana and around the world.

We offer a B.A. in Political Science, as well as two dual degrees with Economics and Philosophy and several minors. Our undergraduate students are encouraged to build specializations in areas such as international relations, world political regions, and political theory. We also coordinate internships, service learning, and on‑the‑job learning experiences to help you develop skills to build your career.

Training the next generation of political scientists is part of our mission, too. We offer a graduate degree in Political Science, as well as a Ph.D. minor for students pursuing a graduate degree in another department or school. As part of their training, our graduate students teach courses in their specialties, under the supervision of experienced faculty members.

Department Specific Responsibilities

Oversees all daily departmental operations, ensuring effective workflow, policy compliance, and operational continuity.

Supervises front office staff including the receptionist, office assistant, graduate office assistant, and account associate.

Collaborates closely with undergraduate advisors and departmental IT to support academic and administrative functions.

Interprets and applies university and college policies to ensure consistent and accurate execution of departmental tasks.

Plans and develops comprehensive fall, spring, and summer course schedules in coordination with the Executive Committee and field coordinators.

Manages the full scheduling process, including updating spreadsheets and maintaining accurate information within College ELVIRA.

Ensures timely and accurate course offerings for undergraduate and graduate programs.

Coordinates the Course Evaluation process by submitting courses for evaluation and managing the transfer of results into departmental rating spreadsheets.

Compiles and maintains evaluation data used for instructional improvement and faculty merit review.

Safeguards the integrity of the evaluation process to support student success and faculty assessment.

Supports and administers the annual Merit Review process in collaboration with the Personnel Committee.

Maintains strict accuracy and confidentiality in evaluating faculty performance in research, teaching, and service.

Provides high‑level oversight to ensure the process meets departmental and institutional standards.

Serve as an active member of the Executive Committee, contributing comprehensive departmental knowledge to discussions on issues, planning, and problem‑solving.

Acts as a central knowledge resource, ensuring consistency and alignment across departmental leadership.

Assists the Chairperson with Board of Advisors communication, drawing on deep departmental knowledge to provide accurate information on curriculum, history, and initiatives.

Participates on the Development Committee to inform decisions regarding accounts, scholarships, and departmental needs.

Advises on resource allocation to support departmental growth and fundraising efforts.

Supports the DC Internship Program by assisting the Director with all aspects of program administration.

Manages student enrollment processes, bursar charges, event planning, and coordination of the DC internship alumni reception each semester.

General Responsibilities

Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including the creation of materials to support these events.

Provides staff communications and serves as liaison to program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public. Approves staff purchase requests; arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities.

Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.

Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers. Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.

Researches available grants and works closely with managers to identify funding needs and potential sources, creates grant proposals that further advance support of the program and program participants. May be responsible for meeting revenue targets.

Constructs and administers program budgets and approves spending. Tracks progress on deliverables, analyzes data on projected spending and prepares reports for higher management and funding sources.

Keeps abreast of best practices to recommend policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

Education

Bachelor's degree.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
